How we handle this → Something happened to GoPro in 2026 that every "GoPro alternatives" page needs to lead with, and most of them still haven't: there is no HERO14. For the first time in a decade GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh. In its place, priced on 20 April 2026, came the MISSION 1 series — MISSION 1 at $599.99 MSRP and MISSION 1 PRO at $699.99 MSRP (checked 28 September 2026; GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off), both with a 1"-type 50MP sensor, 20m of waterproofing and a 207g body. That changes the question this page exists to answer. A year ago "a GoPro alternative" meant something cheaper and better than a $399 HERO13 Black. Now GoPro's flagship is a physically bigger-sensored camera at $599.99 and up, and the HERO13 Black has quietly become GoPro's mid-range option at $429.99 (GoPro's US store, checked 28 September 2026). So there are two honest comparisons to make: alternatives to the GoPro most people will actually buy, and alternatives to the new flagship — where, as we say below without hedging, GoPro's sensor and frame rates now beat everything else on this page. We compared five cameras against that new line-up across riding, hiking and city vlogging: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, the DJI Osmo Action 6, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, the Insta360 X6 and the HERO13 Black itself, because "stay with GoPro but buy the cheaper one" is a real answer that deserves a slot.

◆ TL;DR

Best GoPro alternative overall: Insta360 Ace Pro 2, $369.99 (checked 28 September 2026). It undercuts the HERO13 Black by $60 and the new MISSION 1 by $230, matches MISSION 1's 8K30 resolution, publishes a dynamic-range figure (13.5 stops — though MISSION 1 publishes 14 and the Insta360 X6 14.5) and names a low-light mode (PureVideo). If you want the biggest sensor, GoPro now has it — MISSION 1's 1"-type 50MP beats the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch, and MISSION 1 PRO's 8K60 beats everything — for $230 to $330 more and 23g more. Best pure light-gathering hardware among the alternatives: DJI Osmo Action 6, $436.00 at B&H (checked 28 September 2026) (1/1.1-inch sensor, variable f/2–f/4). Cheapest flagship-class alternative: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, $319.00 — the cheapest camera on this page, $50.99 under the Ace Pro 2. For something GoPro cannot do at all: Insta360 X6, $699.99.

01 Rank 8K301/1.3" sensorLeica SUMMARIT F2.613.5 stopsPureVideo2.5" flip screen12m184g
Product shot · 1:1

Verdict: The strongest all-round package for less than any current GoPro flagship. More resolution than a HERO13 Black, a published 13.5-stop dynamic-range figure (MISSION 1 publishes 14), the only flip screen on this page, and $60 to $230 less than the GoPros a flagship buyer is actually choosing between — though $50.99 more than the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro.

Line the Ace Pro 2 up against the GoPro most people are actually choosing between — the HERO13 Black at $429.99 — and the gap is not subtle. 8K30 against 5.3K60. A 1/1.3-inch sensor against 1/1.9-inch, a full class larger. 13.5 stops of stated dynamic range against a figure GoPro does not publish. A Leica SUMMARIT F2.6 lens against an aperture GoPro does not publish. PureVideo, a named low-light mode, against nothing named. And it costs $60 less. On the criteria that decide what footage looks like, this is not a close comparison.

Two features are genuinely absent from GoPro's entire range rather than merely better here. The 2.5-inch flip screen (900 nits) is the only articulating screen among the cameras on this page, which is the difference between framing a helmet or chest mount and guessing at it. And 18 minutes to 80% off a 30W adapter is the only published fast-charge figure in this comparison — GoPro and DJI publish none, so with them you genuinely do not know what a lunch stop buys you. Insta360 also publishes an operating range of −20°C to 45°C; GoPro publishes the same range for MISSION 1, but not for the HERO13 Black.

Where GoPro still wins, stated plainly. MISSION 1's 1"-type 50MP sensor is larger than the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch, and MISSION 1 PRO shoots 8K60, 4K240 and 1080p960 against the Ace Pro 2's 8K30. If sensor area and frame rate are your two criteria, GoPro's new flagship wins them both and you should buy it. It costs $599.99 to $699.99 at MSRP, which is $230 to $330 more, and weighs 207g against 184g. Separately, GoPro's mount ecosystem is still the deepest in the industry, and if you already own a drawer of GoPro brackets that has a real cash value when you switch. And one workflow limitation worth knowing before you commit to 8K: the Insta360 App can edit 8K but cannot export it — 8K and 11K exports need Insta360 Studio on a desktop, while GoPro Quik exports True 8K from a phone.

02DJI Osmo Action 6 — The Biggest Sensor Among the Alternatives

02 Rank 1/1.1" square 38MPvariable f/2–f/48K304K1203840×3840 @120240 min20m IP68149g
Product shot · 1:1

Verdict: The strongest light-gathering hardware of any camera on this page, and the longest battery. Dearer than the Insta360, and DJI keeps its dynamic-range claim out of its own spec table.

If your objection to GoPro is image quality in poor light, the Action 6 is the most direct hardware answer available. Its 1/1.1-inch square 38MP sensor is larger than the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3-inch and larger than the HERO13 Black's 1/1.9-inch, and its variable f/2–f/4 aperture is the only variable aperture in this comparison — wide open, it passes more light than Insta360's fixed F2.6. Against GoPro's new MISSION 1, though, its sensor is the smaller of the two.

It also wins the endurance specs outright: 240 minutes rated runtime, the longest here; 20m IP68 bare waterproofing (60m cased), matching MISSION 1 and beating Insta360's 12m; and 149g, lighter than both the Ace Pro 2's 184g and MISSION 1's 207g. Stabilisation comes in three published flavours — RockSteady 3.0, HorizonSteady and HorizonBalancing — and the square sensor's 3840×3840 at 120fps is a genuinely clever answer to cutting vertical and horizontal versions of one clip.

The reservations are price and disclosure. At $436.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026) it is $66.01 more than the Ace Pro 2 for the same 8K30 top resolution. DJI's spec table carries no dynamic-range figure (its 13.5-stop claim appears only in a press release), and DJI publishes no fast-charge figure and no named low-light mode, so the low-light case rests on hardware specs alone. And there is no official US price to anchor to: DJI publishes none (its only official figure, 379, is in euros), so a US retailer's price is the only reference. Re-check it before you buy — a drop that closed most of the $66.01 gap would change this ranking. And for US readers: DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Action 6 in the USA, so it is bought from US retailers such as B&H rather than from DJI itself.

03 Rank 1/1.3"f/2.84K120240 min20m146g64GB built in
Product shot · 1:1

Verdict: The endurance-and-weather pick, and the cheapest camera on this page. 240 minutes, 20m bare, 146g and 64GB of internal storage for $319 — $50.99 less than the Ace Pro 2, but with no 8K and no published dynamic range.

The Action 5 Pro remains the sensible cheap alternative to a GoPro, and it beats the HERO13 Black on the things a HERO13 buyer would care about: the same 1/1.3-inch sensor class as the Insta360, a full class above GoPro's 1/1.9-inch; 240 minutes against GoPro's published figure of more than 1.5 hours at 5.3K30 for the HERO13; 20m bare waterproofing against 10m; 146g against 159g; 64GB of built-in storage (47GB usable) as a backstop for the day you forget the card. And it is $110.99 less than the HERO13 Black.

Against the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 it is the cheaper camera, and that is the headline. At $319.00 it costs $50.99 less than the Ace Pro 2, and for that saving you accept less resolution (4K120 versus 8K30), a narrower lens (f/2.8 versus F2.6), no published dynamic-range figure, no named low-light mode and a fixed screen. Buy it over the Insta360 for the lower price, the 60-minute battery advantage and 20m of waterproofing — and for multi-day trips with no charging and no shelter, the last two are a genuinely decisive pair of specs. It is a good argument for the right buyer.

Product shot · 1:1

Verdict: Not a GoPro replacement — a different tool. Shoot everything, choose the angle later. On specs it comprehensively out-guns GoPro's MAX2, which costs $400 less on its current promotion ($200 less at list).

The X6 is on this page because it does something no GoPro in the range can. Two 1/1.1-inch square Sony sensors at F2.0 capture everything around you at 8K50 in 360, or 5K60 / 4K120 as a flat single-lens camera. You shoot the ride and pick the angle afterwards, and the invisible-selfie-stick trick still looks like drone footage to anyone who doesn't know how it's done. It carries PureVideo with two additional ambient light sensors, is rated to 20m bare (60m cased; Insta360's product page gives IP68, its manual IPX8), and its 2.32-inch OLED runs at 1200 nits — the brightest screen anywhere in this comparison, which matters more than it sounds like on a bright day.

GoPro's answer is the MAX2 at $299.99 (on promotion, list $499.99, checked 28 September 2026), and this is a comparison worth making honestly in both directions. The X6 wins on almost every specification: 8K50 against MAX2's 8K30, two 1/1.1-inch sensors against MAX2's two 1/2.3-inch, 20m of waterproofing against 5m. But MAX2 costs $400 less while the promotion runs ($200 less at list), and that is not a rounding error — for a lot of buyers wanting to try 360 for the first time, that gap is the whole decision. The X6's 140-minute rated runtime (at 8K30) is also shorter than the Ace Pro 2's 180 minutes and both DJIs' 240, though longer than MISSION 1's 1.5 hours at 8K30.

Buy the X6 if 360 is the reason you are shopping and image quality matters more than entry price. If you just want to see whether you like 360 at all, MAX2 at $299.99 on promotion is the cheaper way to find out.

Verdict: Not an alternative to GoPro — the answer for people who want GoPro without paying MISSION 1 money. Best stabilisation and mounts here; smallest sensor and shallowest waterproofing.

Sometimes the honest recommendation on a "GoPro alternatives" page is a GoPro. If you already own GoPro mounts, use GoPro Quik (which, unlike the Insta360 App, does export True 8K from a phone), and want HyperSmooth 6.0 — still the benchmark for chest and helmet POV — the HERO13 Black at $429.99 is the sane way to stay in the ecosystem. It shoots 5.3K60, 4K120 and 2.7K240, weighs 159g, and is the cheapest camera GoPro sells that a flagship buyer would be happy with.

What you are accepting: a 1/1.9-inch sensor, the smallest here and a class below both the Insta360 and DJI options, which shows most at dusk and indoors; 10m of waterproofing, the shallowest on this page; and a price $60 above the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, which out-resolves it and publishes a dynamic-range figure it does not. GoPro's published runtime for it is more than 1.5 hours at 5.3K30.

One thing to be clear about, because a lot of listings still aren't: the HERO13 Black is no longer GoPro's flagship. MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO are, from $599.99 MSRP. If you are buying a HERO13 Black in 2026, buy it as the value GoPro, not as the top of the range.

Two rows decide most purchases. Price, where the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is the cheapest camera in the table at $319.00, the Ace Pro 2 is next at $369.99, and both undercut every GoPro in the table — the Ace Pro 2 by $60 or more. And sensor, where GoPro's MISSION 1 wins outright with a 1"-type 50MP chip — bigger than DJI's 1/1.1-inch and bigger than Insta360's 1/1.3-inch. Anyone who tells you an Insta360 has the largest sensor in action cameras in 2026 has not updated their page since the MISSION 1 and Action 6 launches.

Note also the "not published" count. Insta360 publishes a dynamic-range figure, a fast-charge figure, a named low-light mode and an operating temperature range for the Ace Pro 2. GoPro publishes a dynamic-range figure (14 stops, half a stop more than the Ace Pro 2's 13.5) and an operating range for MISSION 1, but neither for the HERO13 Black. DJI publishes the same −20°C to 45°C operating range as the Ace Pro 2 for the Action 5 Pro (checked 28 September 2026), and its 13.5-stop dynamic-range claim for the Action 6 appears only in a press release, not in its spec table. Neither DJI nor GoPro publishes a fast-charge figure or names a low-light mode for any camera in this table. That asymmetry is not proof of better images; it is proof of who is prepared to be measured.

Which One Should You Buy?

Best GoPro alternative overall: Insta360 Ace Pro 2, $369.99. It is $60 less than the HERO13 Black and $230 to $330 less than the MISSION 1 series, matches MISSION 1's 8K30, beats the HERO13 Black by a full sensor class, and is the only camera in the comparison that publishes a fast-charge figure (18 minutes to 80%). It also publishes a dynamic-range figure (13.5 stops, behind MISSION 1's 14 and the X6's 14.5) and an operating range (−20°C to 45°C), and names a low-light mode (PureVideo). It has the only flip screen of the cameras compared here. It is not the cheapest — the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is $50.99 less — and that extra buys the 8K30, the flip screen and the published figures. This is the one we would buy.

Best hardware among the alternatives: DJI Osmo Action 6, $436.00 at B&H (checked 28 September 2026). A 1/1.1-inch sensor with a variable f/2–f/4 aperture, 8K30, 240 minutes, 20m and 149g. If you weight sensor area and battery above everything, and you are content to buy from a US retailer because DJI does not sell it officially in the USA or publish a US price, it is the strongest specification sheet here that isn't a GoPro.

Best value: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, $319.00. 240 minutes, 20m bare, 146g and 64GB built in, $110.99 less than the HERO13 Black. It is the cheapest camera here, $50.99 less than the Insta360, and gives up resolution and the published specs for that, so buy it for the saving, endurance and weather.

If you want what GoPro cannot do: Insta360 X6, $699.99 — 8K50 in 360, two 1/1.1-inch Sony sensors, 20m, and a 1200-nit screen, against GoPro MAX2's 8K30, two 1/2.3-inch sensors and 5m. Just know MAX2 is $299.99 on promotion (list $499.99), which is $400 less while the promotion runs, and that is a real argument for trying 360 cheaply first.

◆ Our honest take

GoPro did not stand still in 2026 — it did something more interesting than a HERO14. The MISSION 1 series' 1"-type 50MP sensor is the largest in this comparison, and MISSION 1 PRO's 8K60, 4K240 and 1080p960 are frame rates nothing else here approaches. On raw capability, GoPro's new flagship is the most impressive camera on this page and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What it isn't is good value: $599.99 to $699.99 at MSRP, 207g, and no published fast-charge figure or named low-light mode. It does publish its F2.8 aperture and 14 stops of dynamic range, half a stop more than the Ace Pro 2's 13.5. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 delivers the same 8K30 resolution for $230 to $330 less, with the only flip screen on this page. That is why it takes the top slot: not because GoPro fell behind on hardware, but because GoPro's hardware lead now costs roughly 60 to 90 per cent more.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best GoPro alternative in 2026?

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at $369.99. It matches GoPro MISSION 1's 8K30 resolution for $230 less, has a 1/1.3-inch sensor against the HERO13 Black's 1/1.9-inch, publishes 13.5 stops of dynamic range (GoPro's MISSION 1 publishes 14, the Insta360 X6 14.5) and names a low-light mode (PureVideo). It also has the only articulating screen among the cameras compared here and the only published fast-charge figure (18 minutes to 80%). If you want the largest sensor rather than the best value, GoPro's own MISSION 1 (1"-type, 50MP) now has it — for $599.99 MSRP (checked 28 September 2026).

Why is there no GoPro HERO14?

Because GoPro didn't make one. For the first time in a decade GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh and instead launched the MISSION 1 series, priced on 20 April 2026: MISSION 1 at $599.99 MSRP and MISSION 1 PRO at $699.99 MSRP (checked 28 September 2026; GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off), both with a 1"-type 50MP sensor, 20m waterproofing and a 207g body. The HERO13 Black is still sold, at $429.99 on GoPro's US store, and is still the current HERO-line camera — it is simply no longer GoPro's flagship overall. Any 2026 buying guide still comparing everything to a "HERO14" is describing a camera that does not exist.

Is DJI or Insta360 better than GoPro now?

It depends on the criterion, and the honest answer has changed this year. Sensor size: GoPro wins — MISSION 1's 1"-type 50MP beats DJI's 1/1.1-inch and Insta360's 1/1.3-inch. Frame rate: GoPro wins — MISSION 1 PRO's 8K60 and 4K240 lead the page. Stabilisation for POV: GoPro's HyperSmooth 6.0 is still the benchmark, and its mount ecosystem is the deepest. Published specification and resolution per dollar: Insta360 wins — 8K30 for $369.99, 13.5 stops of stated dynamic range (half a stop behind MISSION 1's published 14), PureVideo, a flip screen, an 18-minute fast charge. Battery, waterproofing and price: DJI wins at 240 minutes, 20m and $319.00 for the Action 5 Pro. Pick your criterion and the answer follows.

Should I switch from GoPro, given I already own the mounts?

Work out what the mounts are worth to you first, because all these cameras use standard action-camera mounting and GoPro's ecosystem is genuinely the deepest — if you own something unusual, that has cash value. Then weigh it against the gap: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is $60 less than a HERO13 Black with a full sensor class more, 8K30 against 5.3K60, a published dynamic-range figure and a flip screen. If you are starting fresh, that is an easy call. If you have a drawer of GoPro brackets and shoot mostly daylight POV, staying on the HERO13 Black at $429.99 is defensible — just don't buy it believing it is still GoPro's flagship. One workflow point in GoPro's favour: GoPro Quik exports True 8K from a phone, while the Insta360 App can edit 8K but needs Insta360 Studio on a desktop to export it.

Who is GoPro's biggest competitor?

Insta360 and DJI. No manufacturer publishes unit sales, so "biggest" cannot be settled from published figures — but on the specifications, those are the two brands whose current cameras meet GoPro's head-on. In flat action cameras, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319.00 and the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at $369.99 both undercut the GoPro HERO13 Black at $429.99 (all checked 28 September 2026), and, unlike the Action 6, the Action 5 Pro is listed on DJI's US store (out of stock there in every combo; B&H has it). In 360 cameras the contest is Insta360's X-series against the GoPro MAX2. GoPro keeps one clear lead of its own: the largest accessory and mount range of the three.
