The closest alternative to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is the Insta360 Luna Ultra, at $769.99 (Insta360 store, checked 28 September 2026): a 1-inch sensor on a 3-axis gimbal like the Pocket 3's, plus a second, 60mm lens. For a water rating and a flip screen, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 ($369.99, checked 28 September 2026); for 360, the Insta360 X5 ($549.99) or the Insta360 X4 Air ($399.99), both checked 28 September 2026, after their Labor Day promotions ended.

Four things send a Pocket 3 owner looking. DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Pocket 4 or Pocket 4P in the USA, so there is no US-sold DJI successor. The Pocket 3 is the previous generation. DJI publishes no water rating for it. And it cannot record 360. Each pick below answers one of those, and says what it gives up.

The counterweight comes first. The Pocket 3 is still $439.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026; DJI's US store lists it at $439 but it is out of stock), $330.99 cheaper and 54 g lighter than the Luna Ultra, and its 1-inch sensor is larger than the Ace Pro 2's, the X5's and the X4 Air's. If none of the four reasons applies to you, keep it; our DJI Osmo Pocket 3 review says why.

Every figure here is a manufacturer's published specification or an authorised retailer's dated price, and where nothing is published the table says not published.

\* Insta360 publishes 184 g; B&H lists 177.2 g. We use the manufacturer's figure.

The runtimes are not like-for-like. Each is quoted in its maker's stated mode where one is given, so do not subtract across modes. Published sources disagree on the size of the Luna Ultra's telephoto sensor, so the table says only that it is smaller than the main.

Why people look past the Pocket 3 — and how we ranked the alternatives

The four reasons, and the camera that answers each.

  • The successor is not officially sold in the USA. The Luna Ultra keeps a 1-inch sensor on a 3-axis gimbal and adds a second lens, the thing the Pocket 4P was built to do.
  • Age. The Pocket 3 is the previous generation; DJI's successor generation exists outside the USA.
  • No water rating. The Ace Pro 2, 12 m without a housing.
  • No 360. The X5 or the X4 Air.

A flip screen is not on that list: the Pocket 3's 2.0-inch rotating screen is, as our review argues, its best design decision. The Ace Pro 2's flip screen matters because it keeps self-framing on a body with a water rating.

The ranking criteria, in order. A camera ranks above another if it wins the first criterion on which the two differ.

1 · Officially sold in the USA, at a price we checked and dated. A gate, not a score. The Osmo Pocket 4 and 4P fail it, and so do DJI's Osmo Nano and Osmo Action 6, for the reason given after their specifications below. DJI's Osmo 360 is a changed case: DJI's US store now lists it at $549.99, but it was out of stock in every combo on 28 September 2026, so it cannot be bought from DJI in the USA today and is not ranked here. The Insta360 GO Ultra passes this gate ($449.99, Insta360 store, checked 28 September 2026) but none of criteria 2 to 4, so it is named there but not ranked.

2 · Keeps a 1-inch-type sensor behind a 3-axis mechanical gimbal. Only the Luna Ultra passes, its gimbal rated to ±0.005°, the Pocket 3's own figure. First.

3 · Keeps self-framing on a flip screen and adds a water rating without a housing. The Ace Pro 2 passes: a 900-nit flip screen, 12 m bare. Second. DJI's Osmo Action 5 Pro has a front screen, not a flip screen, and appears in the concession section because it beats the Ace Pro 2 on depth.

4 · Adds 360 capture. The X5 and X4 Air both pass at 8K30, and tie at 15 m bare, 60 m cased.

5 · Low-light hardware: sensor size, then published dynamic range. The X5's two 1/1.28" sensors and 13.5 published stops beat the X4 Air's two 1/1.8" sensors and no published figure. X5 third, X4 Air fourth.

6 · Weight and price, stated for every pick and never used to reorder the list. The X4 Air wins here: 165 g, the only ranked pick lighter than the Pocket 3's 179 g, at $399.99 (28 September 2026). It comes last so the ranking holds for a reader who already knows the X4 Air is lighter and cheaper than the X5.

highlight A criterion with no published figure cannot be scored.

DJI keeps dynamic range out of its spec tables entirely; Insta360 publishes no screen brightness for the X5 or X4 Air and no dynamic range for the X4 Air. So the tables say not published, and our how we test page explains why.

The verdict in one line: the one alternative that keeps the Pocket 3's 1-inch sensor and 3-axis gimbal and adds what the Pocket 3 cannot do, a second, 60mm lens, for $330.99 more.

The Luna Ultra is the Pocket 3 with a second lens: a 20mm F1.8 main and a 60mm F2.0 telephoto, against one lens with digital-only zoom, 2× at 4K. If your subject is ever further away than you can walk, that is the difference. It also runs 74 minutes longer on a cell 19% larger.

It gains nothing on water: the Luna Ultra has no waterproofing at all, a draw with the Pocket 3's "not rated". Lens-by-lens detail is in our Pocket 3 vs Luna Ultra comparison.

  • Two lenses, 20mm F1.8 and 60mm F2.0; 1×–12× zoom
  • Gimbal rated ±0.005°, level with the Pocket 3
  • 240 min from 1550 mAh, against 166 min from 1300 mAh
  • 2.0" OLED at 1000 nits, against 700
  • 47 GB internal; 23 min to 80% at 45 W, where DJI states none for the Pocket 3
  • Officially sold in the USA, which the Pocket 4P is not

− Cons

  • $330.99 more than the Pocket 3 (both checked 28 September 2026)
  • 233 g, 54 g heavier
  • No water, dust or splash rating at all
  • "8K" is a marketing figure; no 4K high-frame-rate figure stated, against the Pocket 3's 4K120
  • Telephoto on a smaller sensor, so the weaker lens in low light
  • Operating temperature not stated

The verdict in one line: 12 m without a housing, a 2.5-inch flip screen so you can still frame yourself, and the cheapest of the four ranked picks at the dated prices.

The Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12 m (39 ft) bare, where the Pocket 3 is not rated at all, and its flip screen is the only one among the ranked picks (the unranked GO Ultra has one too, but on its Action Pod, which is splashproof only). It is $69.01 less than the Pocket 3 at the dated prices ($369.99 against $439.00, both checked 28 September 2026).

It gives up the Pocket 3's defining feature: FlowState Stabilization is electronic, not a mechanical gimbal. On weight the sources disagree. Insta360's 184 g makes it 5 g heavier than the Pocket 3; B&H's 177.2 g would make it 1.8 g lighter. Its 180 minutes is rated at 1080p24 with Active HDR off, not comparable minute for minute with the Pocket 3's 166.

The verdict in one line: record every direction and choose the frame afterwards, with the larger sensors and the published dynamic range of the two 360 picks.

The X5 records what no pocket gimbal can: 8K30 360 video and 72MP (11904×5952) 360 photos, so where you point it stops mattering. Its F2.0 lenses match the Pocket 3's aperture. It is $110.99 more than the Pocket 3 (both checked 28 September 2026).

It gives up the gimbal and the finished frame: nothing it records is ready until you reframe it, which what a 360 camera is explains.

The verdict in one line: 165 g, 14 g lighter than the Pocket 3 and the only ranked pick that is, at the cost of smaller sensors and far lower-resolution 360 stills.

The X4 Air launched on 28 October 2025 and is not a rebadged X4. It is $39.01 less than the Pocket 3 and $150.00 less than the X5 (all checked 28 September 2026). The savings come out of the image: its 29MP 360 photo is far below the X5's 72MP, the one place the word "Air" catches buyers out.

Where DJI wins — what the Pocket 3 still does better

Three concessions, all on published figures. DJI's US store lists both cameras in this section, the Pocket 3 at $439 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319, but had both out of stock on 28 September 2026; B&H had both in stock.

1 · The Pocket 3 beats the Luna Ultra on price and weight: $439.00 against $769.99, $330.99 less, both checked 28 September 2026, and 179 g against 233 g, 54 g lighter. Both gimbals are rated to ±0.005°, so our first pick is level on stabilisation, not ahead. Neither has any water rating, so on water it is no improvement at all.

2 · The Pocket 3 has a larger sensor than every other alternative here. Its 1" beats the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3", the X5's 1/1.28" and the X4 Air's 1/1.8"; only the Luna Ultra's main sensor matches it. None of those three puts its sensor behind a mechanical gimbal. The Pocket 3 records 4K120, double the frame rate of the X5's and X4 Air's 4K60 single-lens ceiling, and its f/2.0 is wider than the Ace Pro 2's F2.6. It is 5 g lighter than the Ace Pro 2 on Insta360's 184 g (B&H's 177.2 g reverses that) and 21 g lighter than the X5.

3 · For the water reason, DJI's Osmo Action 5 Pro beats our second pick on depth, weight, runtime and price. It is rated to 20 m bare against the Ace Pro 2's 12 m, 8 m deeper, and 60 m cased, and weighs 146 g against 184 g, 38 g lighter. It is rated at 240 minutes against 180, in different stated modes, so we give both rather than subtract. It has 64 GB built in (47 GB usable). At $319.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026) it is also $50.99 less than the Ace Pro 2's $369.99.

It is not ranked because it has no flip screen (a 2.5" rear and a 1.46" front), no mechanical gimbal and no 360, failing criteria 2, 3 and 4, and its dynamic range is not published. But on depth and price it is genuinely better than our second pick, and a reader whose only reason is water should know it. More in our Osmo Action 5 Pro head-to-head.

Insta360 takes the ranked slots on the second lens, on a water rating with a flip screen, and on 360. Not on sensor size against the Pocket 3, not on weight against the Pocket 3 except with the X4 Air, not on price against the Pocket 3 except with the Ace Pro 2 and X4 Air, and not on depth or price against the Osmo Action 5 Pro.

The Pocket 4 question, and what to skip

Why not the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 or 4P? DJI does not officially sell either in the USA, and that is the only argument this page makes against them. What they are, and what a US buyer can do instead, is in our DJI Osmo Pocket 4 review.

DJI's other small cameras are not a straightforward US buy either. Specifications first, then the availability fact for each.

  • DJI Osmo Nano: a 52 g camera module plus a 72 g Vision Dock, 10 m with the dock IPX4 only; $349.00 (64 GB) or $368.00 (128 GB) on promotion at B&H (regular $389 / $409), 28 September 2026. DJI does not officially sell it in the USA and publishes no USD price for it.
  • DJI Osmo 360, DJI's 360 answer: 1/1.1", 8K50 in 360, 183 g, 10 m, 800 nits; $466.99 on promotion at B&H (list $549.99), 28 September 2026. DJI's US store lists it at $549.99 but it is out of stock in every combo. The Osmo 360 II launched globally on 3 September 2026 with no US price or US release date.
  • DJI Osmo Action 6: 149 g, 20 m; $436.00 at B&H, 28 September 2026. DJI does not officially sell it in the USA and publishes no USD price for it.

The B&H figures are a retailer's prices, two of them for cameras DJI has not launched here, and DJI's 13.5-stop dynamic-range figures for all three are press-release only.

The GO Ultra has a flip screen too, on its pod. The Insta360 GO Ultra camera has a 1/1.28" sensor, 4K60, 50MP and f/2.85, and its Action Pod carries a 2.5-inch flip touchscreen. The camera is 10 m rated, but Insta360 rates the Action Pod IPX4, splashproof only (checked 28 September 2026), so the flip screen does not go in the water: it does not answer the water reason the way the Ace Pro 2 does. It runs a 200-minute combined runtime with its Action Pod and takes microSD up to 2 TB. It is $449.99 (Insta360 store, checked 28 September 2026) and unranked because it passes none of criteria 2 to 4: no gimbal, no water-rated flip screen and no 360; see our Insta360 GO Ultra review.

Skip the Luna Ultra if water is any part of your reason. It has no water, dust or splash rating at all.

Skip the X4 Air if stills matter, at 29MP in 360 against the X5's 72MP. Skip both 360 cameras if you will not reframe: see what a 360 camera is.

Keep the Pocket 3 if you shoot wide, stay dry and do not need 360. That is a real answer on an alternatives page, the same way our GoPro alternatives guide keeps a slot for staying put. Our Pocket 3 review sets out what you keep.

Which one to actually buy

For the Pocket 3's gimbal and 1-inch sensor plus reach, buy the Insta360 Luna Ultra at $769.99 (Insta360 store, checked 28 September 2026): $330.99 and 54 g more, and still no water rating.

If the missing water rating is the reason, buy the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at $369.99 (Insta360 store, checked 28 September 2026): 12 m and a flip screen, without the gimbal or the 1-inch sensor. If depth matters more than the flip screen, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319.00 (B&H, 28 September 2026) goes 8 m deeper for $50.99 less.

For 360, buy the Insta360 X5 at $549.99 (28 September 2026), or the Insta360 X4 Air at $399.99 (same date) if weight and price matter more than stills.

If the Pocket 4 was the plan, it is not officially sold in the USA.

If none of those is your reason, keep the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, $439.00 at B&H on 28 September 2026.
