The GoPro MISSION 1 is GoPro's new top-of-range action camera: a 1"-type 50MP sensor, 8K30 video, a published 14 stops of dynamic range and a 20 m rating without a housing, at $599.99 (GoPro's US store and B&H, checked 28 September 2026). It is for people who buy on image quality and will pay for it.

It is also the camera that out-specs the one this site recommends most. On sensor size, dynamic range and depth, MISSION 1 beats the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 on published figures, and this review says so first. It does not win every row. The Ace Pro 2 is $369.99 (checked 28 September 2026), shoots the same 8K30, takes the same 50MP stills, weighs less, and has the only flip screen on this page.

MISSION 1 went on sale on 28 May 2026. It is not a new HERO camera, and it is not the MISSION 1 PRO, which is where 8K60 lives.

The short version: if image quality is the thing you buy on, this is the action camera to beat in 2026. If value, weight or a screen you can see yourself in matters more, it isn't, and the camera that wins those costs $230 less.

The Six Specs That Decide It

Sensor size and dynamic range lead this table because MISSION 1 wins both. Bold marks the strongest published figure in each column, and where cameras tie, all of them are bold.

The first three columns go to GoPro. The last two turn against it: 207 g is the heaviest figure here, and $599.99 is $230 more than the Ace Pro 2's price. Resolution sits in the middle as a tie, unless you pay another $100 for the PRO. Those are the three parts of this review.

First Impressions

MISSION 1 weighs 207 g. That is 23 g more than the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at 184 g, 48 g more than the GoPro HERO13 Black at 159 g, and 58 g more than the DJI Osmo Action 6 at 149 g. On a helmet or a chest mount, that is the spec you feel all day.

Inside is a 1"-type 50MP sensor behind an F2.8 lens and a 2150 mAh Enduro 2 battery, in a body rated to 20 m without a housing. On the back is a 2.59-inch OLED; on the front, a 1.4-inch screen for framing yourself. The front screen is GoPro's answer to vlogging; Insta360's flip screen is a different, larger one.

Stabilisation is HyperSmooth. GoPro gives the HERO13 Black a version number, HyperSmooth 6.0, but publishes none for MISSION 1; MISSION 1 PRO adds AutoBoost. No one on this page publishes a measurable stabilisation figure, so we don't rank it on paper.

For the first time in a decade, GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh. The HERO13 Black has no successor — it stays on as the HERO-line flagship at $429.99 (GoPro's US store, checked 28 September 2026), and the MISSION 1 line sits above it as the new top of range. GoPro writes the names in capitals with the numeral 1: MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO ILS and MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition. This review covers the standard MISSION 1 and names the PRO where they differ.

Sensor and Dynamic Range: Where GoPro Wins

This comes first because GoPro wins it.

GoPro publishes 14 stops of dynamic range for MISSION 1. That beats the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's published 13.5. It beats DJI's 13.5 for the Osmo Action 6, which appears only in a press release and not in DJI's own spec table. And it beats the GoPro HERO13 Black, which publishes no dynamic range figure at all. Across both of this site's verified reference files, exactly one camera publishes more: the Insta360 X6 at 14.5 stops. That is a 360 camera and a different purchase. Among action cameras, 14 stops is the highest published figure we hold.

The sensor argument is just as simple. MISSION 1's 1"-type 50MP sensor is physically larger than the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3", and both cameras take 50MP stills. Same pixel count, more silicon, so each of those 50 million pixels has more sensor area to work with. It is also a larger type designation than the Osmo Action 6's 1/1.1". On sensor size MISSION 1 leads every camera on this page, tied only with its PRO sibling.

MISSION 1 PRO publishes the same 14 stops and adds GP-Log2, GoPro's log profile. That matters if you colour-grade, because log footage is how you get those stops into an edit. It does not add more range than the standard MISSION 1 publishes.

highlight On the two figures that describe what a sensor can record, MISSION 1 beats the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 by half a stop of published dynamic range and by a whole sensor class, at the same 50MP. This is the strongest case for the camera, and it holds.

Neither figure tells you how GoPro processes what the sensor records. A published dynamic range is a manufacturer's claim, but it is the best comparable claim available, and GoPro's is the better one.

Depth and Runtime: GoPro's Second Win

Depth. MISSION 1 is rated to 20 m without a housing. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12 m, so GoPro goes 8 m deeper before you reach for a case. MISSION 1 PRO carries the same 20 m and a 60 m housed rating. The HERO13 Black is rated to 10 m. For anything below the surface, 20 m bare is the more useful rating.

Runtime, and how it's disclosed. GoPro publishes MISSION 1's battery life per shooting mode: 1.5 h at 8K30 and 3 h+ at 4K30, from the 2150 mAh Enduro 2. That is the more useful kind of figure, because it tells you what shooting at 8K costs in battery before you find out on a trip.

Insta360 gives the Ace Pro 2 a single rating of 180 min from an 1800 mAh battery. It is not an 8K figure, and our verified reference has no 8K30 runtime for the Ace Pro 2. The numbers don't compare directly, and we won't claim 180 minutes beats 1.5 hours. What we can say is that GoPro tells you the 8K cost and, on the evidence we hold, Insta360 does not. On runtime disclosure, GoPro publishes more than Insta360 does, and that concession belongs to GoPro.

Where the DJI Osmo Action 6 beats MISSION 1

The DJI Osmo Action 6 beats MISSION 1 on two published specs:

  • Weight: 149 g against 207 g, which is 58 g less. That is the largest weight gap on this page.
  • Runtime: 240 min. GoPro's longest published figure for MISSION 1 is 3 h+ at 4K30. The two companies don't state their test modes the same way, but on the published numbers DJI's rating is the longer one.

The Action 6 also matches MISSION 1's 20 m without a housing, and it is $436.00 at B&H (checked 28 September 2026) against MISSION 1's $599.99.

Availability is a separate matter. DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Action 6 in the USA and publishes no USD price for it (its own pricing is 379 EUR), so the $436.00 is a retailer's number. That affects buying and support in the US. It does not change 149 g or 240 min.

Resolution: A Tie at 8K30

Resolution is a tie between MISSION 1 and the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. MISSION 1 records 8K30 and 4K120. The Ace Pro 2 records 8K30. Both take 50MP stills. On maximum resolution, this is level.

The mistake to avoid is treating MISSION 1 as an 8K60 camera. It isn't. 8K60 and 4K240 belong to the MISSION 1 PRO, at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026), which is $100 more.

Same sensor, same aperture, same weight, same 14 stops. The $100 buys frame rate, a log profile and a housed depth rating. If you shoot for slow motion, the PRO is the camera. If you shoot at normal speed, the standard MISSION 1 gives up nothing you would see.

For context, the GoPro HERO13 Black tops out at 5.3K60, with 4K120 and 2.7K240. The Osmo Action 6's maximum is disputed between our own reference files, so the tables print both.

Price, and What GoPro Doesn't Publish

The price is $599.99 (checked 28 September 2026), the same at GoPro's US store and at B&H. GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off, but that is not a price a new buyer can get, so this page does not quote it as the price.

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is $369.99 at Insta360's US store (checked 28 September 2026), with no promotion shown; B&H has it at $399.99. Against MISSION 1 that is $230 less, about 62% of the price; against B&H's $399.99, the gap is $200. Either way, the Ace Pro 2 wins back several rows on published figures:

  • Screen brightness. The Ace Pro 2 publishes 900 nits. GoPro publishes no screen-brightness figure for any camera it sells, MISSION 1 included. That isn't proof of a dim screen; it means you can't check.
  • Articulation. The Ace Pro 2 has a 2.5-inch flip screen, the only articulating screen among the cameras on this page. MISSION 1 has a fixed 2.59-inch OLED and a 1.4-inch front screen.
  • Weight. 184 g against 207 g.
  • Aperture. F2.6 Leica optics against F2.8. It's a narrow margin, and it sits in front of a smaller sensor.
  • Charging. The Ace Pro 2 reaches 80% in 18 minutes at 30 W. GoPro does not publish a fast-charge time for MISSION 1.
  • Low light. The Ace Pro 2 has PureVideo, a named, switchable low-light mode. Our verified reference records no equivalent named mode for MISSION 1.

Fig.03 — THE MISSION 1'S 2.59 INCH OLED IN DIRECT SUN. GOPRO PUBLISHES NO BRIGHTNESS FIGURE SO THE ACE PRO 2'S 900 NITS IS THE ONLY NUMBER AVAILABLE TO COMPARE AGAINST.

What the Ace Pro 2 does not take back is cold weather: both cameras publish −20 °C to 45 °C, a tie. GoPro's gaps have a precise scope: no screen brightness anywhere in its range, no fast-charge time or HyperSmooth version for MISSION 1, and for the HERO13 Black an operating range (−10 °C to 35 °C) that exists only at a retailer. On MISSION 1, GoPro does publish dynamic range, runtime per mode and operating temperature, more than it publishes for the HERO13 Black.

The full Insta360 case is in our Insta360 Ace Pro 2 review: $369.99, 184 g and a 900-nit flip screen, against 13.5 stops to GoPro's 14.

GoPro wins the sensor row, the dynamic range row and, jointly with DJI, the depth row. DJI wins weight, runtime and screen brightness. Insta360 wins price, articulation and published charging. The three "not published" cells in the MISSION 1 column are GoPro's own gaps: brightness, HyperSmooth version and fast-charge time.

Pros and cons

+ Pros

  • 1"-type 50MP sensor, larger than the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3" and the Osmo Action 6's 1/1.1"
  • 14 stops of published dynamic range; only the Insta360 X6's 14.5 is higher in our reference
  • 20 m without a housing, 8 m deeper than the Ace Pro 2
  • Runtime published per mode: 1.5 h at 8K30, 3 h+ at 4K30
  • 8K30 and 4K120, with 50MP stills
  • 2.59" OLED rear screen plus a 1.4" front screen
  • Published −20 °C to 45 °C operating range

− Cons

  • $599.99, $230 above the Ace Pro 2's $369.99 (both checked 28 September 2026)
  • 207 g: 23 g heavier than the Ace Pro 2 and 58 g heavier than the Osmo Action 6
  • Rear screen does not articulate
  • No published screen-brightness figure
  • No published fast-charge time
  • HyperSmooth version not published
  • 8K60 and 4K240 require the MISSION 1 PRO at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026)

The Honest Limitation

MISSION 1 costs $599.99 (checked 28 September 2026). The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 costs $369.99 (checked 28 September 2026) and shoots the same 8K30 at the same 50MP stills count.

The extra $230 buys four real things: the larger 1"-type sensor, half a stop more published dynamic range, 8 m more depth without a housing, and runtime figures published per mode. (Against B&H's $399.99 for the Ace Pro 2, the premium is $200. It is still a premium.)

It does not buy a screen brighter than 900 nits, because GoPro publishes no brightness figure at all. It does not buy a screen that articulates. And it does not buy a lighter camera: 207 g against 184 g. 8K60 isn't on this camera either. That takes another $100 and the PRO.

The honest limitation of MISSION 1 is that it is the imaging pick and not the value pick, and the value pick shares its headline resolution.

Verdict

Buy the GoPro MISSION 1 if image quality is the criterion you buy on. Its 1"-type sensor and published 14 stops beat everything else on this page, and 20 m without a housing means it goes in the sea without a second thought. It costs $599.99 (checked 28 September 2026).

Buy the MISSION 1 PRO if you need 8K60, 4K240 or GP-Log2 for grading, or a 60 m housed rating. It has the same sensor, the same 14 stops and the same 207 g for $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026).

Buy the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 if you film yourself, if weight matters, or if $230 matters. It matches MISSION 1 on 8K30 and 50MP, has the only flip screen here at a published 900 nits, and charges to 80% in 18 minutes, for $369.99 (checked 28 September 2026). It gives up half a stop, a sensor class and 8 m of depth. For most people that is the right trade.

Buy the DJI Osmo Action 6 if weight and runtime decide it: 149 g and 240 min beat MISSION 1 on both, and it matches the 20 m. It is $436.00 at B&H (checked 28 September 2026), and DJI does not officially sell it in the USA.

Don't wait for a HERO13 successor. GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh this cycle. The HERO13 Black remains the HERO-line flagship at $429.99 (GoPro's US store, checked 28 September 2026).

Ready to decide?

Prices will move. The Ace Pro 2's $369.99 is Insta360's own US store price; B&H has it at $399.99. MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO are the same at GoPro and B&H. GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off, which is not a price a new buyer can get, so this page does not quote it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the GoPro MISSION 1 cost?

$599.99 (checked 28 September 2026), at GoPro's US store and at B&H. GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off, but that is not a price a new buyer can get. The MISSION 1 PRO is $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026).

What is the difference between the GoPro MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO?

Frame rate, log and housed depth. The PRO records 8K60, 4K240 and 1080p960, against MISSION 1's 8K30 and 4K120. It adds GP-Log2 and a 60 m housed rating, and it costs $699.99 against $599.99 (both checked 28 September 2026). Sensor (1"-type, 50MP), aperture (F2.8), weight (207 g), dynamic range (14 stops) and bare depth (20 m) are the same on both.

Is there a newer GoPro HERO than the HERO13 Black?

No. GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh for the first time in a decade. The HERO13 Black remains the HERO-line flagship at $429.99 (GoPro's US store, checked 28 September 2026), and the MISSION 1 line sits above it as GoPro's new top of range.

GoPro MISSION 1 vs Insta360 Ace Pro 2: which is better?

It depends on the criterion, and both answers are on published figures. MISSION 1 wins sensor size (1"-type against 1/1.3"), dynamic range (14 stops against 13.5) and depth (20 m against 12 m). The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 wins price, at $369.99 against $599.99 (both checked 28 September 2026). It also wins weight (184 g against 207 g), screen (a published 900 nits on a flip screen, where GoPro publishes no brightness figure) and charging (a published 18 minutes to 80%). They tie at 8K30 and 50MP.
