The best action camera for most people is the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at $369.99 (Insta360's US store, checked 28 September 2026; $399.99 at B&H). It is the only one of the four cameras ranked here with a screen that flips forward. It shoots 8K30 and publishes 13.5 stops of dynamic range in its own specification table, for $230 less than the GoPro MISSION 1. It is not the cheapest pick, and it does not win every row; the rows it loses are set out below.

Each of the other three wins something the Ace Pro 2 does not. The GoPro MISSION 1 ($599.99) has the largest sensor and the highest published dynamic range of any flat camera here. The Insta360 X6 ($699.99) publishes 14.5 stops and records in 360. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro ($319.00 at B&H) is the cheapest, the lightest and the longest-running.

We rank on what manufacturers publish, and a specification nobody publishes cannot be scored. GoPro publishes no screen-brightness figure for any camera it sells. DJI keeps dynamic range out of its specification tables. Where a figure is missing, the tables say not published.

The deciding column is published dynamic range. It separates these cameras more than any other number, and it is the one manufacturers most often leave out.

The Ace Pro 2 matches MISSION 1 on flat 8K30 and costs $230 less. It wins no column outright: the Osmo Action 5 Pro is $50.99 cheaper, and every other column goes to at least one rival.

On price: the Ace Pro 2's $369.99 is Insta360's own US store price, with no promotion shown; B&H has it at $399.99, and against that figure the gap to MISSION 1 is $200. MISSION 1 is $599.99 at both GoPro and B&H. GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off, which is not a price a new buyer can get. The Osmo Action 5 Pro's $319.00 is B&H's price: DJI's US store lists it at $319 but it is out of stock in every combo.

What actually matters in an action camera

Six criteria, in the order they decide this page. We set them out before the picks so you can check the ranking against them.

1 · Published dynamic range. This is how much of the range from deep shadow to bright highlight a sensor holds in one frame. It decides whether a face in shade and the sky behind it both survive. Insta360 publishes 13.5 stops for the Ace Pro 2 and 14.5 for the X6. GoPro publishes 14 for MISSION 1 and nothing for any other camera. DJI's 13.5-stop figures appear only in press releases, and the Osmo Action 5 Pro has none.

2 · Sensor size. MISSION 1's 1"-type sensor is the largest here. The X6 has two 1/1.1" sensors, one per lens. The Ace Pro 2 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro share 1/1.3".

3 · Maximum resolution, and what "8K" means. On a flat camera, 8K30 fills the frame you watch. On a 360 camera, 8K50 is spread across a sphere, and any flat video you export is a crop of it. The two are not comparable.

4 · Weight. The Osmo Action 5 Pro is 146 g, the Ace Pro 2 184 g, the X6 196 g and MISSION 1 207 g. On a helmet, a chest mount or all day in a pocket, those differences are noticeable.

5 · Depth without a housing. MISSION 1, the X6 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro are rated to 20 m. The Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12 m.

6 · Price, dated. Every price names where it was checked, and promotional prices are flagged. None of the four picks is on promotion as of 28 September 2026.

A criterion with no published figure cannot be scored, so disclosure is a criterion too. Here is who publishes what:

highlight GoPro publishes no screen-brightness figure for any camera it sells, and DJI keeps dynamic range out of its specification tables entirely.

Insta360 is not clean here either. It publishes neither figure for the GO Ultra or the X4. The weighting behind the ranking is on our how we test page.

The verdict in one line: the only camera here with an articulating screen, and it shoots 8K30 with 13.5 published stops for $230 less than MISSION 1.

The case for the Ace Pro 2 is value on published figures. It has 13.5 stops, half a stop behind MISSION 1, with the same flat 8K30 ceiling and the same 50MP stills count, for $230 less than MISSION 1. It is not the cheapest camera here: the Osmo Action 5 Pro costs $50.99 less, but it tops out at 4K120 and publishes no dynamic-range figure.

The 2.5-inch, 900-nit flip screen is the only articulating screen among the picks. If you film yourself, you can see the framing rather than guess it.

It charges to 80% in 18 minutes at 30 W. PureVideo is a named low-light mode. Stabilisation is FlowState Stabilization with 360 Horizon Lock. Its published operating range, −20 °C to 45 °C, is the joint-widest here, level with MISSION 1 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro.

The verdict in one line: the best sensor and the highest published dynamic range of any flat camera here, for $230 more than the Ace Pro 2.

GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh for the first time in a decade. MISSION 1 went on sale on 28 May 2026 as its new top of range instead. Its 1"-type sensor is the largest here, and 14 stops is the highest dynamic range any flat camera on this page publishes. It is rated to 20 m bare. The 2150 mAh Enduro 2 battery is rated per mode, 1.5 hours at 8K30 and over 3 hours at 4K30, which tells you more than a single headline number. GoPro publishes −20 °C to 45 °C.

The costs: $230 more than the Ace Pro 2, and at 207 g the heaviest pick. GoPro publishes no screen-brightness figure and no HyperSmooth version. The rear screen does not articulate. For 8K60 you need MISSION 1 PRO at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026). It adds 4K240 and a 60 m housed rating and publishes the same 14 stops.

The verdict in one line: one camera that records every angle at once, with the highest published dynamic range here, at the cost of a reframing step before anything is ready to publish.

Two 1/1.1" custom Sony sensors behind F2.0 lenses record the whole sphere, so you choose the shot afterwards. Insta360 publishes 14.5 stops, half a stop above MISSION 1, and a 2.32-inch OLED screen rated at 1200 nits. Both are the highest figures on this page. It is rated to 20 m bare and 60 m in the Invisible Dive Case Pro, weighs 196 g, and is rated at 140 minutes at 8K30. The lenses are replaceable. One discrepancy: the product page says IP68 and the manual says IPX8. Both give 20 m, and we report both.

The costs: $699.99 is $100 above MISSION 1's $599.99. The Insta360 App cannot export 8K on a phone, so 8K needs Insta360 Studio on a desktop. Every clip needs reframing. And the published −20 °C to 40 °C range stops 5 °C short of the Ace Pro 2, MISSION 1 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro.

The verdict in one line: the cheapest, lightest and longest-running camera here, in stock in the USA at B&H, and the only pick that publishes neither dynamic range nor screen brightness.

It wins two criteria outright, and it is also the cheapest pick. At 146 g it is 38 g lighter than the Ace Pro 2. Its 1950 mAh battery is rated at 240 minutes, 60 more. It is rated to 20 m bare and 60 m cased, and it carries 64 GB of built-in storage (47 GB usable). Stabilisation is RockSteady 3.0 / 3.0+ with HorizonSteady, with a 2.5-inch rear screen and a 1.46-inch front screen. The sensor is 1/1.3" behind an f/2.8 lens. DJI publishes an operating range of −20 °C to 45 °C (checked 28 September 2026), level with the Ace Pro 2 and MISSION 1.

It ranks fourth for two reasons. Video tops out at 4K120. And DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure for it, and no screen-brightness figure either. It is the cheapest pick, $50.99 under the Ace Pro 2, but price is the last of this page's six criteria, and it does not outweigh those two.

This page does not hold availability against it. DJI's US store lists it at $319 but it is out of stock in every combo; B&H has it in stock at $319.00, so a US buyer can get it. That is a different position from the Osmo Action 6 and Osmo Nano, which DJI does not sell in the USA at all.

How it measures against GoPro's HERO line: DJI Action 5 Pro vs GoPro HERO13.

Where the rivals beat the Ace Pro 2

The Ace Pro 2 ranks first on the combination of flat 8K30, 13.5 published stops and the only flip screen, for $230 less than MISSION 1. It is not the cheapest pick. Here are the rows it loses, with the margins.

GoPro MISSION 1 beats it on published dynamic range by half a stop, 14 stops against 13.5. Only one camera on this page publishes more than GoPro's 14: the Insta360 X6 at 14.5, which is a 360 camera and a different purchase. MISSION 1's 1"-type 50MP sensor is physically larger than the Ace Pro 2's 1/1.3", at the same stills count. Its 20 m depth rating beats 12 m by 8 m. If image quality in hard light matters most and budget does not, MISSION 1 is the better camera on published figures.

DJI's Osmo Action 5 Pro is 38 g lighter, 146 g against 184 g, is rated to run 60 minutes longer, 240 minutes against 180, and costs $50.99 less, $319.00 against $369.99. It is in stock in the USA at B&H even though DJI's own US store is out of stock, so availability does not soften this one. For a full day on a helmet, those numbers matter more than anything else here.

GoPro's HERO13 Black is 25 g lighter than the Ace Pro 2, at 159 g, for $60 more at $429.99 (GoPro's US store, checked 28 September 2026).

The Ace Pro 2 wins on the flip screen, its optics and fast charging, and it undercuts MISSION 1 and the X6 on price. Its published cold rating is shared rather than won: MISSION 1 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro publish the same −20 °C to 45 °C. It does not win on sensor size, dynamic range, weight, battery life or lowest price.

Buying guidance and what to skip

Do not buy on the word "8K" alone. The Ace Pro 2 and MISSION 1 shoot flat 8K30, and MISSION 1 PRO shoots flat 8K60. The X6 shoots 8K50 spread across a 360 sphere. The Insta360 Luna Ultra is marketed as 8K with no supporting resolution in its specification, and it has no waterproofing at all.

GoPro skipped the flagship HERO refresh this cycle. The GoPro HERO13 Black, at $429.99 (GoPro's US store, checked 28 September 2026), is still the HERO-line flagship. It shoots 5.3K60, weighs 159 g and is rated to 10 m. GoPro publishes neither brightness nor dynamic range for it, and its −10 °C to 35 °C operating range comes from a retailer, not GoPro.

The DJI Osmo Action 6 is not officially sold in the USA, and DJI publishes no USD price for it, only 379 EUR. It is $436.00 at B&H (checked 28 September 2026). It weighs 149 g, is rated to 20 m, and has a 1000-nit peak screen and a variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture. Its 13.5 stops is a press-release figure. Our sources disagree on its top resolution: one records 8K30 and another tops out at 4K120. Until that is resolved, we do not rank it.

If weight is the whole decision, look at a different category. The Insta360 GO Ultra camera weighs 52.9 g and costs $449.99 (Standard bundle, checked 28 September 2026). It shoots 4K60 and is rated to 10 m.

For sport, three things decide it:

  • Depth. MISSION 1, the X6 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro are rated to 20 m bare. The Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12 m and the HERO13 Black to 10 m.
  • Operating temperature. The Ace Pro 2, MISSION 1 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro publish −20 °C to 45 °C, and the X6 −20 °C to 40 °C. The HERO13 Black's figure comes from a retailer.
  • Mounts. GoPro's accessory range is the deepest of the three brands. No specification captures it.

What to skip. Skip the X6 as your only camera unless you edit on a desktop. Skip MISSION 1 PRO unless you will actually deliver 8K60, because at $699.99 it costs the same as the X6. And re-check any price before you buy.

Which one to actually buy

Buy the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at $369.99 (Insta360's US store, checked 28 September 2026; $399.99 at B&H) if you want one flat action camera and will give up half a stop to MISSION 1 to save $230. It publishes 13.5 stops, a 900-nit screen and a −20 °C to 45 °C range, and it has the only flip screen here. For most readers this is the answer.

Buy the GoPro MISSION 1 at $599.99 (checked 28 September 2026) if dynamic range and sensor size come first and the $230 gap does not matter to you.

Buy the Insta360 X6 at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026) if one camera has to cover every angle and you edit on a desktop.

Buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026) if weight, battery or the lowest price decide it. Accept that it tops out at 4K120 and publishes no dynamic-range figure.

Ready to decide?

All prices checked 28 September 2026: the Ace Pro 2 at Insta360's US store ($399.99 at B&H), MISSION 1 at GoPro and B&H, the X6 with no promotion, and the Osmo Action 5 Pro at B&H (DJI's US store lists it at $319 but it is out of stock). GoPro subscribers of more than a year get $100 off; that is not a price a new buyer can get. All prices will move.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best action camera?

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2, at $369.99 (checked 28 September 2026). It has the only flip screen of the four ranked here, shoots 8K30 and publishes 13.5 stops, for $230 less than GoPro MISSION 1, which publishes 14 stops on a larger sensor at $599.99. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is cheaper at $319.00 but tops out at 4K120.

What is the best 8K action camera?

For flat 8K30, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and GoPro MISSION 1 both record it. MISSION 1 publishes 14 stops against 13.5, and the Ace Pro 2 costs $230 less (both checked 28 September 2026). MISSION 1 PRO records flat 8K60 at $699.99. The Insta360 X6 records 8K50 across a 360 sphere, which is not comparable with a flat frame.

What is the best action camera for sports?

It depends on the sport. For water, MISSION 1, the Insta360 X6 and the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro are rated to 20 m without a housing, against the Ace Pro 2's 12 m. For cold, the Ace Pro 2, MISSION 1 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro publish −20 °C to 45 °C. For weight on a helmet, the Osmo Action 5 Pro is lightest at 146 g.

What should I look for in an action camera for sports?

Look for the depth rating without a housing, a published operating-temperature range, the weight, and whether the mount you need exists. Not every manufacturer publishes the temperature figure: the GoPro HERO13 Black's comes from a retailer. On mounts, GoPro's range is the deepest.
