◆ Key takeaways
- An 8K UHD frame is 7680×4320, or 33.2 million pixels, four times 4K and 16 times 1080p.
- A 360 camera's 8K spreads 7680×3840 across the whole sphere, and no manufacturer publishes a reframed clip's resolution.
- The practical 4K vs 8K win is crop room and 33.2MP frame grabs.
- GoPro rates MISSION 1 at up to 1.5 hours at 8K30 and 3+ hours at 4K30. Low light and slow motion favor 4K.
What Is 8K?
The 8K UHD format is a frame 7680 pixels wide and 4320 tall, at 16:9 with square pixels. ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020, the ultra-high definition television standard (BT.2020-2, October 2015), defines it alongside 3840×2160 4K UHD. Cinema uses a slightly wider DCI 4K frame of 4096×2160.
The label means roughly 8,000 pixels across and promises nothing about height. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 also records a 2.35:1 frame at 7680×3272.
On action cameras, the GoPro MISSION 1 records 8K30 and the MISSION 1 PRO 8K60. Google's answers to "what is 8K" also include an SEC filing and a road race, neither of which fits on a helmet.
4K vs 8K: The Pixel Math and What Your Eyes Can See
Four times the pixels does not mean four times the visible detail. Screen size and distance decide how much of the 8K vs 4K gap you see.
The ITU-R Report BT.2246 on ultra-high definition television (09/2025) sets its ideal viewing distance where one pixel fills one arc-minute of vision. It gives 3.1 picture heights for 1920×1080, 1.5 for 3840×2160 and 0.75 for 7680×4320.
A 65-inch 16:9 TV is about 31.9in tall, so the ideal distance is about 48in (4ft) for 4K and 24in (2ft) for 8K. A couch 8–10ft back is already past the 4K distance.
On an action camera, the extra resolution earns its keep in the edit, long before anyone watches it.
8K Video on an Action Camera Means Four Different Things
A spec sheet that says "8K video" can describe two different frames, and the flat one does two more jobs in the edit.
Flat 8K: A 7680×4320 Frame
The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 records 7680×4320 at up to 30fps, as does the DJI Osmo Action 6 (US availability varies between DJI and retailers, so check before buying). MISSION 1 PRO also has a 4:3 Open Gate mode at up to 30fps. The GoPro HERO13 Black stops at 5.3K60.
360 8K: One Frame Spread Across a Sphere
The Insta360 X5 records 360 video at 7680×3840 up to 30fps, and the Insta360 X6 records the same frame at up to 50fps. GoPro calls the MAX2's top mode "True 8K" without giving its dimensions.
Those 29.5 million pixels cover every direction at once. Every reframed clip is a crop of that sphere, because how a 360 camera records leaves the choice of angle until later. A reframed clip also keeps the sphere's frame rate, so the X6's 8K50 against the X5's 8K30 is one of the specs that separates two picks for the best 360 camera.
◆ Key finding
A flat camera's 8K30 and a 360 camera's 8K30 are different purchases. You watch the flat frame whole, and you only ever watch a slice of the sphere.
8K as Crop Room for a 4K Edit
A 7680×4320 frame is exactly twice 4K on each axis, so a 2x crop still delivers a full 3840×2160 picture. GoPro markets the MISSION 1 series with the line "Crop up to 2X for true 4K." Use the margin to tighten a wide POV or to leave room for a stabilization crop in Gyroflow. A full-height 9:16 crop is 2430×4320, larger than vertical 4K.
8K Frame Grabs
A single 7680×4320 frame is a 33.2MP still. The Ace Pro 2 and MISSION 1 shoot 50MP photos, and GoPro rates the HERO13 Black at 24.7MP frame grabs and 27MP photos. A grab catches the moment a timed photo misses, as long as the shutter was fast enough to freeze it.
What 8K Costs You
| Camera | 8K mode | Frame | Max bitrate (any mode) | What changes in 8K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | 8K30 | 7680×4320 | 180Mbps | No PureVideo (4K60 max) |
| GoPro MISSION 1 / PRO | 8K30 / 8K60 | not published | 240Mbps | Up to 1.5 hours at 8K30 vs 3+ at 4K30 (GoPro) |
| DJI Osmo Action 6 | 8K30 | 7680×4320 | 120Mbps | 16:9, RockSteady/RockSteady+, three FOVs only |
| Insta360 X5 / X6 | 8K30 / 8K50 360 | 7680×3840 | 180 / 360Mbps | Whole sphere |
| GoPro MAX2 | "True 8K" 360 | not published | 300Mbps (GoPro Labs) | 10-bit color (GoPro) |

GoPro is the only brand here that publishes an 8K runtime, and on MISSION 1 it's half the 4K30 figure or less. Every flat 8K mode above stops at 30fps except the PRO's 8K60, so you also give up 4K120 slow motion.
At maximum bitrate, a 180Mbps camera writes about 1.35GB a minute and a 240Mbps camera about 1.8GB. Treat those as ceilings for card space.
Low light favors 4K on the Ace Pro 2, since its PureVideo mode runs only up to 4K60. Any action camera for low light also does better at 30fps, which allows a longer shutter time and more light per frame.
Phone editing is the last catch, because mobile video editing apps each set their own export ceiling. CapCut exports no higher than 4K60, and the Insta360 App cannot export 8K on a phone, which leaves Insta360 Studio on a desktop. GoPro Quik exports True 8K from the MAX2 on a phone, and LumaFusion exports 8K on capable hardware.
Is 8K Worth It? The Jobs Where It Pays Off
| Job | Shoot in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scenic POV you'll reframe | 8K30 | Crop room for a 4K edit |
| One moment you want as a still | 8K | A 33.2MP frame grab |
| Night or indoors | 4K30 | PureVideo, longer shutter |
| Slow motion | 4K120 | Flat 8K stops at 60fps |
| A long day on one battery | 4K30 | Double the MISSION 1 runtime |
My 4K vs 8K default is a flat camera left in 4K and switched up for specific shots. Footage watched on a phone or a TV across the room sits past the ITU distances, where the extra pixels go unseen.
5.3K vs 4K: The Middle Step
The HERO13 Black sits between the two, with 5.3K60 and 4K120. On runtime, 5.3K vs 4K costs nothing on paper. GoPro rates the HERO13 Black at 1.5+ hours at both 4K30 and 5.3K30.
The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro tops out at 4K120, which makes resolution one of the clearer splits in the Osmo Action 5 Pro vs HERO13 Black matchup. Its US stock varies by retailer, so check before buying.
What Manufacturers Don't Publish
None of these was on the manufacturer pages we checked on September 30, 2026:
- The bitrate of any camera's 8K mode (only maximum bitrates are published)
- Recording-time or overheating limits at 8K
- The resolution of a clip reframed from 360 footage
- Pixel dimensions for GoPro's 5.3K, MISSION 1 8K modes or MAX2 True 8K
Frequently asked questions
Can Humans See the Difference Between 4K and 8K?
Yes, humans can see the difference between 4K and 8K, but only up close on a large screen. ITU-R Report BT.2246 puts the ideal viewing distance for 8K at 0.75 picture heights, against 1.5 for 4K. On a 65-inch TV, that's about 2ft vs 4ft. From a couch, the 8K vs 4K gap falls below what the eye resolves.
How Many Megapixels Is 8K?
An 8K frame is about 33.2 megapixels, because 7680×4320 is 33,177,600 pixels. A 360 camera's 8K frame is smaller, at 7680×3840 or about 29.5MP, and it covers the whole sphere. An 8K frame grab is still a video frame, so the shutter speed you recorded at decides whether it's sharp enough to use as a photo.
Is There Any 8K Content?
Yes, there is 8K content, but not much of it. YouTube accepts 8K uploads and recommends 80–160Mbps for standard-frame-rate 8K SDR, according to YouTube Help (checked Sep 30, 2026). Most of what an 8K TV shows is upscaled from 4K or HD. An action camera's own footage is one of the easier native sources.
Is 8K the Highest Resolution?
No, 8K is not the highest resolution, though it is the top format in the ITU-R BT.2020 standard. The Insta360 X6 records a 16K (15360×7680) 360 timelapse, which Insta360 says works in Insta360 Studio only. The X6's standard 360 video still tops out at 8K50.
Is 8K30 Better Than 4K60?
Yes, 8K30 is better than 4K60 for detail and cropping, and no, it is not better for motion. An 8K30 clip holds four times the pixels, so it wins for reframing and frame grabs. A 4K60 clip gives smoother motion and plays back as 2x slow motion on a 30fps timeline. Fast action favors 4K60.
Four Times the Pixels, Spent One Shot at a Time
Those 33.2 million pixels earn their place on a tighter crop or a frame you want to print. The rest of the 4K vs 8K trade, runtime and slow motion included, goes to 4K.
Judge the best action camera picks on their 4K modes first, and treat 8K30 as the extra it is on the top-ranked Ace Pro 2.
