◆ Key takeaways

  • The 30fps vs 60fps choice trades smoother motion against light per frame.
  • The slow-motion factor equals capture rate divided by timeline rate, so 120fps on a 30fps timeline plays at quarter speed.
  • Dim scenes favor 30fps, the rate the best action camera for low light guidance recommends, because it allows a 1/30s shutter.
  • The realistic slow-motion floor is 4K120. Among the cameras checked, only GoPro's MISSION 1 PRO models reach 4K240.

What Is Frame Rate?

Frame rate is the number of still images, or frames, a camera records each second, written as fps. Every clip has two rates. The capture rate is what the camera recorded. The timeline rate (also called the project or playback rate) is what your edit plays at, and slow motion lives in the gap between the two.

Frame rateWhere you'll see it
24fpsCinema and the "film look"
25fps and 50fpsTV and web video in PAL regions such as the UK and Europe
30fps and 60fpsTV and web video in NTSC regions such as the US
120fps and 240fpsSlow-motion capture

NTSC left behind the odd-looking 29.97fps and 59.94fps. ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020, the international standard for ultra-high-definition TV, lists frame frequencies of 120, 100, 60, 50, 30, 25 and 24 Hz, plus 1.001 variants of 120, 60, 30 and 24. Divide 30 by 1.001 and you get 29.97.

A 120Hz screen is a separate thing. Refresh rate is how often a display redraws.

24fps vs 60fps and the Film Look

Film has run at 24fps since the sound era, usually with a 1/48s shutter. The pairing leaves a smear of motion blur that audiences read as film. At 60fps with a 1/120s shutter, each frame freezes more of the movement, and the result looks like live sports.

Every camera in the spec table below offers 24fps. The rate suits a planned edit. On bumpy POV the extra blur on a fast pan turns to mush.

30fps vs 60fps: What Changes in Your Footage

The 180-degree rule sets the normal shutter at half the frame interval, which is where most 30fps vs 60fps differences start.

Typical useTalking to camera, travel, dim lightAction, sport, fast pans

In the 60fps vs 30fps choice, 30fps wins when the subject barely moves. A talking head doesn't need 60 frames, and indoors or at dusk the extra light per frame matters more. At a fixed bitrate ceiling, doubling the frames also leaves fewer bits for each one.

Switch to 60fps for fast subjects and pans, which also buys you a half-speed cut. For bright sun, the Osmo Action 6 settings guide locks the shutter at 1/120 and lets the aperture stop down to f/4, so blur stays correct without an ND filter. As of September 28, 2026, DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Action 6 in the USA, though B&H lists it.

What 120fps Does on an Action Camera

A 120fps clip exists to be slowed down. The slow-motion factor is the capture rate divided by the timeline rate.

DJI and GoPro print their slow-motion labels on that same 30fps base, so DJI's 4K label reads "4x (120fps)." Insta360 lists frame rates only.

The price is light. No frame at 120fps can be exposed longer than 1/120s, a quarter of the longest 30fps shutter, so a dim scene gets noisier.

Why 4K120 Is the Floor for Extreme Sports

ACA's best action camera for extreme sports roundup requires "a published 4K frame rate of 120 fps or faster," because 4K120 "slows action to a quarter of real speed" on a 30fps timeline. All four picks clear it. Every camera below records 4K at 120fps, and 4K240 is the ceiling.

GoPro wins on raw frame rate. The standard GoPro MISSION 1 stops at 4K120 and 8K30, and only the PRO adds 4K240 and 8K60. The Osmo Action 5 Pro heads the extreme sports picks at 4K120, but US stock varies. DJI's US store had it out of stock in every combo on September 28, 2026, while B&H had stock.

How Slow Motion Video Works

Slow motion is footage recorded at a higher frame rate than it plays back, so each second of action spreads across several seconds on screen. In true slow motion video, the sensor captured every frame you see. Software frame interpolation, often called optical flow, invents in-between frames instead, and it can smear fast edges like spokes and spray.

High frame rates switch features off, too. On the Osmo Action 6 (no official US sale), DJI states that "EIS is not supported in Slow Motion and Timelapse modes," and it limits HorizonSteady to 60fps or below. Insta360's PureVideo low-light mode tops out at 4K60 on the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, so on that camera you choose between low-light processing and 4K120.

How to Make a Slow Motion Video From 120fps Footage

Four steps turn 120fps footage into real slow motion:

  1. Record at 120fps in plenty of light, with the shutter at 1/240s or faster if you set it manually.
  2. Set the project or timeline to 30fps, or to 24fps for a 5x slow-down.
  3. Conform the clip to the timeline rate, or set its speed to 25% (20% on a 24fps timeline).
  4. Export at the timeline rate.

A 4K30 export also sidesteps app limits. CapCut cannot export above 4K60, and a 4K30 timeline built from 120fps clips stays under that ceiling.

The Best Frame Rate for Each Kind of Shot

The best frame rate is the lowest one that still does the job, because every step up costs light per frame.

ShotFrame rate
Talking head, vlog or everyday4K30
Mountain biking, skiing and diving4K60
Slow-motion moments4K120
Night and low light4K30 (4K24 or 4K30 on GoPro)
Dashcam and long recording1080p30

Long recording is where heat takes over from light. The action camera settings by activity cheat sheet drops to 1080p30 for dashcam-style use, and its fix for heat is to pull the battery and run on USB-C, because the cell is the largest heat source in continuous recording.

What Manufacturers Don't Publish About High Frame Rates

None of the three brands publishes a battery runtime at 4K120.

CameraRated runtime and conditionsPublished bitrate
DJI Osmo Action 6240 minutes at 1080p/24fps120Mbps maximum
Insta360 Ace Pro 2180 minutes at 1080p24, Endurance Mode180Mbps maximum
GoPro MISSION 1 seriesUp to 5 hours at 1080p/30 (Endurance Mode), 3+ hours at 4K/30240Mbps maximum

No brand publishes a bitrate per mode. Neither GoPro nor Insta360 states whether the field of view narrows at 120fps or 240fps, and DJI does not say whether its slow-motion modes record audio.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Human Eye Tell the Difference Between 30fps and 60fps?

Yes, the human eye can tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, because fast motion looks smoother with twice the frames. The eye has no fixed frame rate. A 2015 Scientific Reports study found that people perceive flicker artifacts at rates over 500 Hz when a display shows sharp spatial edges, far above the 50–90 Hz earlier studies reported.

Is 4K Better at 30 or 60fps?

Shoot 4K at 60fps for moving subjects and 4K at 30fps for talking to camera or dim light. The 60fps version also allows a half-speed replay on a 30fps timeline. If a camera forces a choice, 1080p60 usually beats 4K30 for fast action, because smooth motion matters more there.

Does Higher Frame Rate Mean Better Quality?

No, a higher frame rate does not mean better image quality. Frame rate changes how smoothly motion plays, and resolution and detail stay where they were. The cost shows up in low light. Every step up shortens the longest usable shutter, from 1/30s at 30fps to 1/120s at 120fps, so dim frames get noisier.

Is 30fps Too Slow?

No, 30fps is not too slow for most video. It is the standard rate for web and TV video in NTSC regions such as the US. Where it falls short is fast action, and it gives you no slow-motion headroom on a 30fps timeline.

How Do I Turn Off Slow Motion on a Video?

To turn off slow motion on a video, set the clip's speed back to 100% in your editor, or interpret the footage at its native frame rate. A 120fps clip interpreted at 120fps plays in real time. Conformed to a 30fps rate, the same clip plays at quarter speed, because each recorded second fills four seconds of playback.

Count Backward From the Timeline

One second of jump fills four seconds of screen because 120 divided by 30 is four, and every slow-motion decision runs on that division. Decide how slow the moment should play, then shoot the lowest rate that gets there. For most people, 30fps vs 60fps settles as 30fps for the day and 60fps for motion, with 4K120 saved for the moments worth slowing.

Shopping for the camera itself? Every pick in the best action camera ranking already shoots 4K120, so published dynamic range and sensor size set the order there.
