◆ Key takeaways
- Audio fails first, and a lav or furry windscreen beats a built-in mic in wind.
- Learning how to vlog on an action camera means leaving the widest lens mode, which stretches faces at arm's length.
- Shoot 4K30 with a 1/60 shutter under US indoor lighting to avoid flicker.
- A flip or front screen matters most for filming yourself.
- A pocket gimbal walks smoother, but the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has no water rating.
How to Start a Vlog: Pick the Format Before the Camera
Working out how to start a vlog begins with the kind of vlog you'll film, because it decides the camera, the mount and the frame. Most vlogs fall into one of four formats.
| Format | What it looks like | Best camera type | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talking head | You, with the camera fixed in front | Phone on a tripod | Big screen and easy framing indoors |
| Walk-and-talk | Camera in your hand while you move | Pocket gimbal, or an action camera on a stick | A mechanical gimbal smooths footsteps; a stick adds distance |
| Day-in-the-life | Talking plus footage of your day | Phone plus an action camera | Phone for interiors and cafés, action camera for the rough parts |
| Activity POV | Camera on your body, facing the action | Waterproof action camera | Mounts, a water rating and a body built to be dropped |

Pick the aspect ratio at the same time. YouTube wants a horizontal 16:9 frame, while YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels want vertical 9:16. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has what Insta360 calls FreeFrame export, which sends one clip out at 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9.
Phones and action cameras fail in opposite conditions. In the iPhone vs action camera split, the phone takes talking-head content, cafés, interiors and anything on a tripod or in your hand. The action camera takes anything strapped to something that moves, and anything where a drop is plausible.
Vlog Setup: What Actually Goes in the Bag
A vlog setup is short. Buy it in this order, because each item fixes a bigger problem than the next one does:
- A screen you can see yourself on, flipped or front-facing.
- A mic, or at least a windscreen for the built-in one.
- Support for the camera, such as a grip, a selfie stick or a mini tripod.
- A spare battery and a fast microSD card.
- Light, starting with a window.
| Camera | Self-view screen | Weight | External mic route | Water rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | 2.5-inch flip touchscreen, 900 nits | 184g | Insta360 Mic Air accessory; Bluetooth helmet headsets | 12m (39ft) |
| GoPro MISSION 1 | 1.4-inch front LCD plus 2.59-inch rear touch OLED; brightness not published | 207g | USB-C audio and Bluetooth audio | 20m (66ft) |
| DJI Osmo Pocket 3 | 2.0-inch rotatable touchscreen, 700 nits | 179g | DJI Mic 2 or Mic Mini | No water rating |
| DJI Osmo Action 6 | 1.46-inch front screen, 800 nits (typical); 2.5-inch rear | 149g | OsmoAudio direct microphone connection | 20m bare, 60m (197ft) in the Waterproof Case |

Source: Insta360, GoPro and DJI product and spec pages (checked Sep 30, 2026). Depth ratings are factory measurements on a new camera, held still, in clean fresh water. A depth rating is not a dive plan.
The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is the self-filming pick of the action cameras here, because its 2.5-inch screen flips up to face you. Our review says "the flip screen alone settles it for anyone who talks to the lens."
For vlogging with a GoPro, the flagship is the GoPro MISSION 1, with a fixed 1.4-inch front screen. It's smaller than the Ace Pro 2's flip screen, and the camera weighs 207g against 184g. In return you get 20m without a housing, against the Ace Pro 2's 12m.
The Osmo Action 6 is the lightest body here at 149g. DJI's US site carries a product page for it (checked Sep 30, 2026), but its US availability has shifted between DJI's own store and retailers, so confirm stock before you build a kit around it.
Action Camera, Pocket Gimbal or Phone?
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is the walk-and-talk specialist. It pairs a 1-inch sensor with a 3-axis mechanical gimbal and a 2-inch rotatable screen at 179g, and DJI's US site sells it (checked Sep 30, 2026).
The catch is weather. Our review notes "no water rating of any kind," and DJI rates the Pocket 3 to operate at 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F). Action cameras give up the gimbal for electronic stabilization (FlowState on Insta360, RockSteady on DJI, HyperSmooth on GoPro). In exchange they get depth ratings, mounts and a body that shrugs off a drop.
A phone wins when you're indoors and sitting still.
How to Vlog Handheld, on a Tripod or on a Mount
Most of how to vlog on an action camera comes down to where the lens sits. An ultra-wide lens held close to a face exaggerates whatever is nearest to it, which is usually your nose.
Walk-and-Talk at Arm's Length
Hold the lens at or slightly above eye level with your elbow bent. Keep your eyes around the upper third of the frame and your face away from the edges, where wide-lens distortion is strongest.
Switch to the least-distorted lens mode your camera offers, since the widest setting stretches faces at arm's length. A selfie stick adds distance, which flattens your features and fits more of the scene in.
Keep stabilization on and horizon lock off. Your face moves with the camera, so when horizon lock holds the background level, your head appears to tilt every time your wrist rolls.
Talking Head on a Tripod
Set the camera at eye level. Put a window in front of you or to one side, and step away from the wall so the background has some depth.
Mounting differs by brand. GoPro publishes 1/4-20 threads for MISSION 1, so it goes straight onto a standard tripod. The Ace Pro 2 uses Insta360's magnetic mounting system, so your tripod needs the matching mount. DJI's specs page lists no mounting thread for the Pocket 3.
Chest and Helmet POV for Activity Vlogs
When the activity is the vlog, the camera faces out and your voice carries the story. At the good moments, stop and talk to the lens on a stick, then cut between the two in editing.
I'd take a chest mount over a helmet for hiking and riding. Your torso moves less than your head, and the frame shows your hands and the trail ahead.
Vlog Audio: Fix the Sound Before the Picture
Wind noise is air physically hitting the microphone diaphragm. The rumble it leaves has no clean voice underneath to recover, so no plugin will rescue it later.
Foam handles walking pace, but action camera wind noise starts beating it past 20–25 mph. At cycling speed, fur (the "deadcat") is "the difference between unusable and perfectly serviceable audio." ACA's wind-noise guide also puts mic position first. "A basic lavalier under a collar will beat an expensive microphone clipped to a helmet in open air, every time."
Buy the mic your camera maker documents, because each brand lists its own route (see the table above). Then turn on the camera's wind setting. Insta360 lists wind reduction and voice enhancement modes for the Ace Pro 2, plus a removable part it calls the Wind Guard. GoPro lists wind noise reduction for MISSION 1. On the Pocket 3 and Action 6 spec pages, DJI lists no wind setting.
◆ Key finding
Microphone disclosure is uneven. DJI lists three microphones for the Osmo Pocket 3 and GoPro lists four for MISSION 1. Insta360 says the Ace Pro 2 began moving from three microphones to two in July 2026, so two units sold under the same name can carry different mic hardware.
Action Camera Settings for Vlogging
Set these once and save them as a custom preset if your camera has one. Vlogging sits at the calm end of the action camera settings by activity range, so the frame rate drops to 4K30 and the lens narrows to its least-distorted mode. ACA's cheat sheet runs the Ace Pro 2 on FlowState with horizon lock off, DJI's cameras on RockSteady 3.0 and GoPro on HyperSmooth 6.0.
| Setting | Vlogging value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K30 | Plenty of detail for talking; save high frame rates for slow motion |
| Shutter | 1/60 | Follows the 180-degree rule at 30fps; outdoors it may need an ND filter |
| Lens mode | Least distorted | Wide modes stretch faces at arm's length |
| Stabilization | On, horizon lock off | Keeps your head level with the frame |
| Exposure | +0.3 EV | Lifts faces slightly against bright backgrounds |
| Color profile | Standard | Log footage needs grading before it looks right |
| Audio | Wind reduction on | Takes the edge off gusts the windscreen misses |
The shutter matters most indoors. Many lights on AC power pulse twice per mains cycle. The EIA notes that North American grid frequency sits within "a very narrow frequency band around 60 cycles per second." A 1/60 or 1/120 shutter captures whole pulses, so 30fps or 60fps footage stays clean. At 24fps, the usual 1/50 shutter can show flicker or rolling bands under the same lights.
How to Vlog on iPhone, and When an Action Camera Takes Over
Apple's current Pro model is the iPhone 18 Pro (apple.com specs, checked Sep 30, 2026). Apple lists an 18MP Center Stage front camera that records 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60fps, plus wind noise reduction and Audio Mix for sound. Action mode goes up to 2.8K60.
Two phone habits help. Use the front camera when you need to see the frame and the rear cameras for B-roll. Press and hold on your face to lock exposure and focus, so a bright window behind you doesn't pull the exposure around.
Shoot 4K30 if you mix phone and action camera footage, since matching frame rates keeps the cuts clean.
Walk-and-talk on a phone gets easier with a smartphone gimbal that tracks people. The Insta360 Flow 2 Pro tracks people through Apple DockKit, which works on iPhone only.
Hand the job to an action camera when the vlog involves water, a mount on something that moves, hard cold or a likely drop.
How to Make a Vlog: Shot List, Shoot, Edit
Knowing how to make a vlog is mostly knowing what to film before you press record. Give it a hook in the first seconds that tells viewers what they'll get, a middle that delivers it and a short close.
Write a shot list before you leave. It needs A-roll (you talking to the camera) and B-roll (the thing you're talking about). Add one establishing shot of the place and a few cutaways such as hands, signs, food or the view.
On the day:
- Leave 2–3 seconds of silence before and after each line, which gives you room to cut.
- Shoot more B-roll than feels necessary, since every jump cut needs something to cover it.
- Hold each B-roll shot for at least five seconds.
In the edit, cut the pauses, cover jump cuts with B-roll and add captions for muted autoplay. Pick a thumbnail frame while you're there. CapCut tops out at 4K60 export, and LumaFusion runs on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Android and ChromeOS. DaVinci Resolve covers desktop editing when you outgrow iMovie or a phone app.
Vlogging Tips for Beginners
Vlogging for beginners mostly comes down to habits that stop a day's footage going to waste:
- Check the audio with headphones after the first clip, every time.
- Carry a spare battery and a spare card.
- Wipe the lens before each shot. Action cameras live in pockets.
- Ask before you put a stranger's face at the center of the frame.
- Post on one platform first and get consistent there before you spread out.
Travel and hiking vloggers usually don't need a national park permit. Under the NPS filming and photography rules (updated March 17, 2025), most filming by eight or fewer people needs no permit or fee. The conditions are hand-carried equipment only, areas open to the public, no exclusive use of a site and no harm to park resources or other visitors.
Commercial filming and content creation get the same treatment. Confirm with the park before you go.
What Manufacturers Don't Publish
Every figure that would tell you how a camera sounds is missing. Insta360, GoPro and DJI publish no microphone sensitivity, frequency response or wind-attenuation figure for the cameras in this guide. A microphone count, where one is listed, says nothing about how the capsules handle wind.
GoPro does not publish a brightness figure for either MISSION 1 screen. The front screen you'd frame yourself on has no number to set against the Ace Pro 2's 900 nits. DJI does not publish a dynamic-range figure for the Pocket 3 or the Action 6. We don't estimate any of these, and neither should a spec table.
Frequently asked questions
Can I Vlog With Just My Phone?
Yes, you can vlog with just your phone, and a current phone handles talking-head, café and interior vlogs well. Its front camera shows you the frame while you record. Add a small tripod and a clip-on mic. Switch to an action camera when the vlog gets wet, strapped to something moving or likely to end in a drop.
What Are Common Vlogging Mistakes to Avoid?
The most common vlogging mistakes are bad audio, faces distorted by an ultra-wide lens and footage with nothing to cut to. Fix them with a windscreen or lav, the least-distorted lens mode and extra B-roll. Beginners also skip checking the first clip and open with a long intro.
What to Say at the Start of a Vlog?
At the start of a vlog, say what the viewer will get and why they should stay, within the first few seconds. Name the place, the problem or the outcome ("I'm hiking to the lake before sunrise"). Introduce yourself briefly after the hook, and save the channel housekeeping for later in the video.
Do Vlogs Make Money?
Yes, vlogs can make money, mainly through the YouTube Partner Program, sponsorships and affiliate links. YouTube's ad revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days (checked Sep 30, 2026). YouTube says program updates arrive from February 1, 2027.
Which Type of Vlogging Is Best?
The best type of vlogging is the one you can film consistently, because regular uploads matter more than format. Talking head is the easiest to produce at home. Travel and day-in-the-life vlogs need more B-roll, and activity POV needs a waterproof action camera and a mount. Pick the format that fits your week.
Match the Camera to the Vlog You'll Actually Film
The first clip that came back as pure wind was never a camera problem, and most of how to vlog well starts with where the mic sits.
What the camera decides is the body. None of the four here pairs a mechanical gimbal with a water rating, and the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 alternatives split along that line. The Insta360 Luna Ultra keeps the 1-inch sensor and 3-axis gimbal and adds a 60mm second lens, with no water resistance at all. The Ace Pro 2 gives up the gimbal for 12m without a housing.
