The best phone gimbal for most people buying in the US is the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, at $159.99 (Insta360 Store, checked 28 September 2026, its list price with no promotion). It is the only gimbal in this comparison that tracks you inside the iPhone's own Camera app through Apple DockKit and that its maker sells in the US, and it pans in a full 360-degree continuous circle.
The ranking runs on DockKit, then tracking in the phone's own camera app on iPhone and Android with nothing else to buy, then carried weight, phone fit, battery and price. The second pick, the Insta360 Flow 2 Plus, beats the top pick on the second criterion and on price.
Only current models their makers sell new in the US are ranked. That rules out DJI's Osmo Mobile 8, which would otherwise rank first on this page's own criteria: DJI does not sell it in the US (where DJI wins). Every figure here is the maker's published specification; where a maker publishes nothing, Insta360 included, the table says not published or not stated.
At a glance
Rows follow the ranking criteria, DockKit first. The fifth column is the unranked DJI Osmo Mobile 8, and its last row says why.

- Weights are not weighed the same way. Insta360 weighs its 25 g magnetic clamp separately, so it is added back above; DJI's 370 g includes the clamp, built-in tripod and Multifunctional Module; Zhiyun's 390 g is the "bare unit"; Hohem does not say whether its 629 g includes the clamp. Only the product cards' margins are like for like.
- Runtimes are not measured like for like. Insta360 rates 10 h at 25 °C, balanced, flat, Tracking Ring Light off. Zhiyun gives 13.5 h light use and 5.5 h heavy use (iPhone 15 Pro Max) on its parameter page, but 11.5 h in its store comparison table. DJI and Hohem give separate stationary and tracking figures.
- The Q5 Ultra's $69 Standard box has no wireless remote and no AI tracking module. Both come only in the $89 Combo.
- DJI Osmo Mobile 8: DJI does not sell this model in the US. Its US store page returns "The page you are trying to access does not exist". The $149.00 listing is a Best Buy Marketplace listing sold and shipped by Adorama, not Best Buy stock. Check the seller's warranty terms.
What actually matters in a phone gimbal
Eligibility comes first. A gimbal is ranked only if it is a current model its maker sells new in the US, from its own US store, on 28 September 2026. One bought from a third party, with no maker's US price or store, is a different purchase, and its warranty depends on the seller. That removes the DJI Osmo Mobile 8, which would rank first on the criteria below, and the 8P (where DJI wins). The old-stock Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P are in the buying guidance.
The six criteria, in ranking order:
1 · Apple DockKit, Apple's own framework: the iPhone's Camera app does the tracking, with nothing extra to buy. Insta360 says the Flow 2 Pro works in the native Camera app and "200+ iOS apps". It needs an iPhone 12 or later (not the SE 3rd gen or 16e) on iOS 17 or higher, iOS 18 for all camera modes except Pano and Timelapse, and tracks people only. Flow 2 Pro yes; Flow 2 Plus no; Hohem M7 and Zhiyun Q5 Ultra not stated.
2 · Native-camera tracking on iPhone and Android, nothing else to buy. Flow 2 Plus yes, through its included Insta360 AI Tracker, in any app, people and animals. M7 yes, in the "phone native camera". Flow 2 Pro no: Android and animals need the $179.99 AI Tracker Bundle. Q5 Ultra not stated (AI module Combo-only).
3 · Carried weight, like for like. A gimbal left at home stabilises nothing; only margins that survive the different weighing bases count.
4 · Phone fit. 300 g covers most phones, not always one with a lens, case or fold: Flow 130–300 g, 64–84 mm; M7 500 g payload, 58–90 mm, to 12.5 mm thick; Q5 Ultra 170–300 g, 60–85 mm.
5 · Rated battery, runtime then Wh, not like for like.
6 · Price, dated, with the list-to-list gap wherever a promotion meets a list price. Every Zhiyun and Hohem store price here is a promotion; Insta360's are list.
The ranking rule. Criterion 1 orders the picks, a tie falls to the next, and criteria 2 to 6 never override a higher one. "Not stated" counts as not met (how we test explains why). So the Flow 2 Pro is first, the only DockKit pick; the Flow 2 Plus second, tied with the M7 on criteria 1 and 2 and at least 242 g lighter; the M7 third, ahead of the Q5 Ultra on criterion 2; the Q5 Ultra fourth. The cost: the #2 beats the #1 on criterion 2 and is $30.00 cheaper, the #3 beats the #2 on phone fit and battery, and the #4 beats all three on price and published runtime (on conflicting figures).
highlight Pan range is shown but not ranked, because it does not decide whether a gimbal tracks you in the app you use; ranked above weight, it would put the M7 (360-degree infinite) second and the Flow 2 Plus (−210° to 120°) third. Fill lights are not ranked: each brand measures at a different distance, or none.

Caption: A 500 g payload on a 629 g gimbal, before the 118.5 g tripod.
+ Pros
- 500 g payload, the only phone gimbal here rated above 300 g
- 58–90 mm wide, 6.9–12.5 mm thick, foldables to 12.5 mm folded
- App-free tracking, "Compatible with phone native camera and all your live streaming and video apps", of pets, buildings and cars too; tracking 0.5–7 m

- Its tracker's fill light (40 lux at 0.5 m, 2 W, RGB 360 colours, 2700–6500 K) is not comparable with other brands' figures
04Zhiyun SMOOTH-Q5 Ultra

- Rated runtime
- 13.5 h (store: 11.5 h)
- Rod and light
- 215 mm rod, built-in 226 lx fill light at 0.3 m
The verdict in one line: the cheapest current gimbal here, with the longest published runtime and a built-in fill light. The $69 box has no remote and no AI tracker, and Zhiyun states neither DockKit nor native-camera tracking.
Caption: $69 against $89, both promotions. The remote and tracker are Combo-only.
+ Pros

- DockKit and native-camera tracking not stated, even with the Combo's module, which decides its rank
- Axis count and pan range not published
- 8.14 Wh; 170 g minimum phone weight against the Flow's 130 g
- 390 g "bare unit", on a different basis from Insta360's: level with the Flow 2 Pro, no weight win either way
- Two conflicting sets of published dimensions, so we print neither; both prices are promotions and may change
Where DJI wins — and by how much
DJI's Osmo Mobile 8, launched 5 November 2025, beats the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro on criterion 2 outright and on criterion 3 by 12 g, and would rank first on this page's own criteria. Its published specifications first:
- Apple DockKit (iPhone 12 or later, iOS 18.5 or later, excluding the SE 3rd gen and 16e) and ActiveTrack 7.0 in DJI Mimo
- An included Multifunctional Module: tracks people, cats and dogs "in the native camera app" and third-party apps on iPhone and Android, without DJI Mimo; fill light (40 lux at 0.6 m, 2500–6000 K); DJI Mic audio reception
- 360-degree unlimited pan and a 215 mm extension rod
- 3350 mAh, 12.06 Wh: ~10 h stationary, ~5 h tracking, ~4 h tracking with the fill light at maximum; ~2.5 h to charge
- ~370 g with clamp, tripod and module; phones 170–300 g, 67–84 mm
The margins. Criterion 2 outright (the Flow 2 Pro needs the $179.99 AI Tracker Bundle); criterion 3 by 12 g, module included; 3.56 Wh more battery energy, though both are rated 10 h; a 215 mm rod against 210 mm; a published fill-light figure where Insta360 publishes none; and $10.99 less, $149.00 against $159.99 (28 September 2026), no was-price shown.
Then the US fact: DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Mobile 8 or 8P in the US. DJI's own US store returns "The page you are trying to access does not exist" for both, and at launch, DroneDJ reported, DJI confirmed the Osmo Mobile 8 would not be officially available in the US, while saying it remains committed to the US market. The $149.00 is not a Best Buy price but a Best Buy Marketplace listing, sold and shipped by Adorama. djiusa.com also lists it ($149.00 with the Module, $109.00 for the Standard Combo) and says it is run by Focus Global Digital Limited, "an independent company that resells DJI products"; its "DJI's Authorized Reseller" label is the site's own claim. Check the seller's warranty terms. DJI does not sell this model in the US.
The Osmo Mobile 8P (7 May 2026) adds ActiveTrack 8.0, phones to 11 mm thick and the 29 g FrameTap detachable touchscreen remote, at 386 g in all. It has no US price anywhere (EUR only: €159 / €189 / €219) and no US retailer listing; DroneXL links that to DJI's addition to the FCC Covered List on 22 December 2025.
Hohem and Zhiyun win things too. The Hohem iSteady M7: a 500 g payload against 300 g, 23.04 Wh against 8.5 Wh, ~12 h stationary against 10 h, and 58–90 mm phones against 64–84 mm. The Zhiyun SMOOTH-Q5 Ultra: $90.99 less than the Flow 2 Pro ($70.99 list-to-list), and 13.5 h against 10 h (11.5 h in its store table). The Hohem iSteady V3: the widest phones checked, 58–98 mm.
highlight Among gimbals sold officially in the US, the Flow 2 Pro wins on DockKit, Apple Watch control of the native Camera app, continuous pan (shared with the M7), the lowest minimum phone weight, the fastest published partial charge and an undiscounted list price. Not on battery energy, not on payload, not on phone width and not on price.
Insta360 vs DJI vs Zhiyun vs Hohem — and what to skip
Which company makes the best phone gimbal?
For a US iPhone owner, Insta360: the Flow 2 Pro is the only gimbal here with DockKit that its maker sells in the US, and the Flow 2 Plus puts iPhone and Android native-camera tracking in the box at $129.99. On DJI vs Insta360 vs Zhiyun: DJI makes the gimbal that ranks first on this page's criteria, the Osmo Mobile 8, and does not sell it in the US; Zhiyun is the cheapest (the Q5 Ultra at $69, a promotion, tracker Combo-only) and publishes the longest runtime (13.5 h, or 11.5 h in its store). Hohem carries the heaviest phones, 500 g on the M7. No Zhiyun or Hohem gimbal checked states DockKit support, which is not the same as lacking it. That is for phone gimbals; for the brands' cameras, see GoPro vs DJI vs Insta360.
DJI in the US: what you can actually buy
Best Buy itself sells the Osmo Mobile 7P at $99.00 and the Osmo Mobile 7 at $75.00 (28 September 2026). Both are old stock: DJI's product pages are gone, and DJI's US store lists them in USD but out of stock. The 7P includes the Multifunctional Module; on the 7 it is optional, and the 7 has no built-in extension rod. Buy either only while it lasts.
What to skip
Prices in this list checked 28 September 2026.
- Zhiyun's cheapest boxes. The $69 Q5 Ultra Standard has no remote or AI tracker. The $135 SMOOTH 5S AI "Standard" (a promotion; compare-at $169) has no AI tracker either; that and "Support Native Camera" tracking need the $175 Combo (compare-at $219), $45.01 more than the Flow 2 Plus ($89.01 list-to-list), at 625–678 g on conflicting weighing bases.
- The SMOOTH-Q4 ($79 promotion, compare-at $99), a 2022 model dearer than the newer Q5 Ultra.
- The plain Flow 2 ($109.99), which tracks in the Insta360 app only: buy the Plus.
- Buying on fill-light lux. DJI measures at 0.6 m, the Q5 Ultra at 0.3 m, Hohem at 0.5 m, and the 5S AI gives no distance.
- The Hohem iSteady V3 ($108.99, a promotion; regular $149.00), unless width is everything: 58–98 mm and up to 13 h, but native-camera tracking is not stated, and it does not fit the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, 12S Ultra, 13 Ultra or 14 Ultra.

Which one to actually buy
iPhone, and you want tracking in the Camera app you already use: buy the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, $159.99.
Android, pets, or both kinds of phone in the house: buy the Insta360 Flow 2 Plus, $129.99, and keep the $30.00.
A heavy phone, a foldable, or a phone with a lens attached: buy the Hohem iSteady M7, $269.00 (a promotion; $299.00 regular).
The lowest price, tracking in Zhiyun's own app or not at all: buy the Zhiyun SMOOTH-Q5 Ultra, $69 Standard, or the $89 Combo for the remote and tracker.
In one line: the Flow 2 Pro tracks you in the iPhone's own Camera app, and its maker sells it in the US. The DJI Osmo Mobile 8 would top this list if DJI sold it in the US; it does not, so buy it only knowing whose warranty you are relying on. All prices were checked 28 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best phone gimbal stabiliser?
The best phone gimbal for most US buyers is the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro at $159.99 (checked 28 September 2026), because it tracks you inside the iPhone's own Camera app through Apple DockKit and Insta360 sells it in the US. It is the best smartphone gimbal here for an iPhone, and the Insta360 phone gimbal to buy. For Android or pets, the Insta360 Flow 2 Plus ($129.99) has a tracker in the box; for heavy phones, the Hohem iSteady M7 carries 500 g; and the Zhiyun SMOOTH-Q5 Ultra is $69, a promotion, with no tracker in that box.
What is the best gimbal for iPhone users?
The Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, because Apple DockKit lets it track you in the iPhone's native Camera app and, Insta360 says, more than 200 iOS apps, with nothing else to buy, and you can control the native Camera app from an Apple Watch. DockKit needs an iPhone 12 or later (not the SE 3rd gen or 16e) on iOS 17 or higher, iOS 18 for all camera modes except Pano and Timelapse, and tracks people only. DJI's Osmo Mobile 8 also supports DockKit (iOS 18.5 or later), but DJI does not sell it in the US.
Which company makes the best gimbal?
For a phone gimbal bought in the US, Insta360: its Flow 2 Pro is the only gimbal in this comparison that combines Apple DockKit with official US sale. DJI's Osmo Mobile 8 ranks first on this page's criteria, but DJI does not sell it in the US; Zhiyun is the cheapest; Hohem carries the heaviest phones. That is for phone gimbals; more in the brand comparison.
DJI vs Insta360 vs Zhiyun: which phone gimbal should you buy?
Buy the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro if you are in the US and use an iPhone; DJI's Osmo Mobile 8 has the stronger published specification but DJI does not sell it in the US, and Zhiyun's SMOOTH-Q5 Ultra is the cheapest at $69, a promotional price for a box with no remote or AI tracker. DJI publishes 12.06 Wh against Insta360's 8.5 Wh; Zhiyun 13.5 h (11.5 h in its store) against 10 h; Insta360 accepts phones from 130 g, against 170 g for both the others. Prices checked 28 September 2026.
