◆ Key takeaways
- Polishing compounds and toothpaste strip a lens's coatings along with the scratch, so replace the scratched part instead.
- A scratched camera lens on the Insta360 X3 or X4 is a service repair, because both have fixed lenses.
- The Insta360 X4 Air, X5 and X6 and the GoPro MAX2 all take replacement lenses.
- Fog on the outside of the glass clears as the camera warms. Fog inside the body means water got in.
Camera Lens Scratch or Just a Smudge? How to Tell
Single-lens cameras such as the GoPro HERO13 Black put a flat cover glass in front of the lens, and that glass takes the hit. Dual-lens 360 cameras have no such buffer. On the Insta360 X4 Air, the lenses are domes that stand proud of the body and touch the ground first.
Plenty of marks that look like a camera lens scratch are dried salt or a fingerprint. Clean before you judge:
- Rinse salt and sand off in fresh water, if the camera is rated waterproof and its doors are shut.
- Blow loose grit away with a dust blower. Wiping sand across glass is how a lot of scratches start.
- Wipe in a circular motion with a lens tissue and a few drops of lens cleaning solution, the method DJI gives in its action camera FAQs.
If the mark survives, shoot a clip toward a bright light. A scratch tends to show as flare streaks or haze. A small edge mark that never shows in footage can stay.
How to Fix a Scratched Camera Lens, and When You Can't
Skip the toothpaste and scratch-remover kits. Both are abrasives, and action camera lenses carry coatings their makers advertise by name. GoPro calls the HERO13 Black's lens cover "hydrophobic," and Insta360 lists an "anti-fouling coating" on the Ace Pro 2's lens guard. Polishing a scratched camera lens takes those layers off with the scratch.
The real fix depends on which design you own.
| Camera | What You Can Replace | Manufacturer's Wording |
|---|---|---|
| GoPro HERO13 Black | Lens cover | "Water-Repelling Replaceable Lens Cover" |
| GoPro MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO | Protective lens and hood | "super-strong hydrophobic Corning Gorilla Glass" |
| GoPro MAX2 | Both lenses | Replacement Lens Kit, "2 Replacement Lenses" plus a tool |
| DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and Osmo Action 6 | Glass Lens Cover | Action 6 cover also swaps for DJI's Macro or FOV Boost Lens |
| Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | Lens guard | "Scratch-resistant high-strength glass lens with anti-fouling coating" |
| Insta360 X6, X5 and X4 Air | Both lenses | X5 lets you "pop out the damaged lenses and snap in fresh ones" |
| Insta360 X4 | Lens guards only | Guards "removable in a pinch"; lenses fixed |
| Insta360 X3 | Stick-on lens guards only | "Sticky Lens Guards"; lenses fixed |

DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Action 6 in the US, and its US store listed the Action 5 Pro as out of stock when we checked on September 28, 2026.
GoPro lens replacement on the GoPro MAX2 means both lenses and an install tool in one kit. On the HERO13 Black and MISSION 1, the part you replace is the cover glass in front of the lens.
A deep scratch on the Insta360 X4's fixed lenses is not a repair a user can make, and no X4 replacement-lens kit exists. When you swap a replaceable lens, Insta360 tells X4 Air owners to "ensure the orange mark on the lens is aligned with the white mark on the camera to avoid clarity and stitching issues."
◆ Key finding
On the Insta360 X3 and X4 the lens guard is the only part you can replace, so it belongs on the camera from day one.
Lens Guards: What an Insta360 Lens Guard Protects, and What It Costs You
An Insta360 lens guard sits over each dome and takes the scratch for it. Insta360 calls its X4 Premium Lens Guards "designed to preserve image quality," a claim it publishes no measurement for.
The Insta360 X3 is the cheapest 360 camera Insta360 sells, and with no replacement-lens kit for it, a deep scratch is a service matter that its stick-on guards exist to prevent. Even with replaceable lenses, Insta360's X5 page recommends "suitable lens protection" outdoors. On the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, the hard lens surround took knocks against a handlebar mount without marking in our review.
Guards have a cost. Each adds two glass surfaces that can catch flare, and trapped dust shows in the frame. GoPro and DJI have the simpler job on single-lens cameras, where one flat cover glass protects the lens.
Lens Fog on an Action Camera: Three Places It Forms
Glass fogs when it's colder than the dew point of the air around it. The National Weather Service defines dew point as "the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%."
| Where the Fog Is | Usual Cause | What to Do | How Worried to Be |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside the glass | Cold camera, warm humid air | Let it warm, then wipe once | Low |
| Inside a housing | Humid air sealed in, cooled by water | Reseal in dry air with desiccant | Low |
| Inside the body | Water got past a seal | Treat it as water damage | High |

Why Camera Lens Fogging Happens After Cold Water or Air Conditioning
Camera lens fogging on the outside is the harmless kind. Climb out of a cold lake, or step from an air-conditioned car into a humid afternoon, and the lens is suddenly below the air's dew point. Repeated wiping only smears water while the glass stays cold. Keep the camera in a sealed bag while it warms, then wipe once with a microfiber cloth. No manufacturer publishes a defog time.
Anti-Fog Inserts and Desiccant for Housings
GoPro sells Anti-Fog Inserts in packs of 15 for its housings, each "Reusable up to four times" after heating "on a pan in the oven at 300°F for five minutes" (about 149°C). Loose silica gel desiccant does the same job in any brand's case.
The air you trap matters more than the insert. Sealing a dive housing well means closing it in the driest, coolest air you can find, with desiccant along the walls and away from the port.
Fog Inside the Lens Means Water
If water is trapped between a removable cover glass and the lens, take the cover off. Fog on the inside of the lens means liquid water is still in the body, and action camera water damage recovery depends on the first 60 seconds. Fog still there at 72 hours points to failed seals.
The Osmo Action 6's IP68 rating comes from IEC 60529, the standard that classifies degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment. DJI rates it to 20m (66ft) uncased, a figure measured on a new camera in still fresh water.
A depth rating is not a dive plan. Before any swim, DJI's FAQ says to check that the Glass Lens Cover is "intact" and to "tighten the Glass Lens Cover."
◆ Warning
Do not power on or charge a camera with fog inside the body. Water across live USB-C pins can short the board.
How to Keep a Camera Lens From Getting Scratched
Never set a 360 camera down lens-first, and carry a microfiber cloth, because a T-shirt hem holds grit. Insta360 sells a Lens Cap for the X3 to "Protect your lenses from scratches."
Insta360 says the X5's "ultra-hard optical film" resists scratches from keys and coins, and calls the X6's lenses "Five times more scratch-resistant" than the X5's. GoPro calls the MISSION 1 cover "Corning Gorilla Glass." None of the pages we checked publishes a hardness rating (Mohs, pencil or otherwise), so those claims can't be compared.
Frequently asked questions
How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Scratched Lens?
The cost to fix a scratched lens depends on which part took the scratch, and no manufacturer we checked publishes a repair price. A cover glass or lens guard is an accessory swap, and a replaceable 360 lens comes as a kit. On a fixed lens, the scratch means a manufacturer service quote or a new camera.
Is It Worth Getting a Camera Lens Protector?
Yes, a camera lens protector is worth getting on any 360 camera with fixed lenses, because the guard is the only part you can replace. The downsides are extra glass surfaces that can add flare and dust trapped underneath. No manufacturer publishes a measured image-quality penalty for them.
How Long Does It Take for a Camera Lens to Defog?
No manufacturer publishes a time for a camera lens to defog. Fog on the outside clears once the glass warms above the dew point of the surrounding air, and a sealed bag stops new condensation forming while it warms. Internal fog still there after 72 hours points to failed seals.
Will a Foggy Camera Go Away?
Yes, a foggy camera usually clears on its own when the fog is on the outside of the lens or inside a housing, because condensation evaporates as the glass warms. Fog inside the camera body is different. It means water got past a seal, so leave the camera off and treat it as water damage.
Can Camera Lens Haze Be Fixed?
Yes, camera lens haze can be fixed when it's residue such as dried salt or fingerprints, using lens cleaning solution and a lens tissue. Haze from a worn or polished-off coating won't clean away, so replace the cover glass, guard or lens. Haze inside the lens means moisture or damage and needs a service repair.
A Scratch Costs Less on a Camera Built to Lose a Lens
Fixed lenses are the honest limitation on the Insta360 X3 and X4, where a scratched camera lens has no user fix. On a GoPro or DJI single-lens camera, the same scratch costs you a cover glass.
The top three picks for the best 360 camera, the X6, X5 and X4 Air, all take replacement lenses, so a scratch there is a parts order.
