◆ Key takeaways

  • Every Insta360 battery life rating comes from a 25°C lab, mostly with the screen off, so treat each one as a ceiling.
  • DJI rates the Osmo Action 5 Pro and Osmo Action 6 at 240 minutes, the highest 1080p24 rating here.
  • Insta360 publishes cold-chamber runtimes for the X5 and X6 down to -20°C (-4°F). DJI and GoPro publish none.
  • DJI alone publishes a charging range, with a 5°C (41°F) floor.

How Insta360 Battery Life Ratings Are Measured

Insta360 footnotes nearly every runtime with a line like "Tested in a lab environment at 77°F (25°C)." Most figures also assume the screen is off and Wi-Fi is on Auto, and many add Endurance Mode or a named bitrate.

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 shows how narrow those conditions get. Its 180-minute rating is for 1080p24 with Active HDR off in Endurance Mode.

◆ Key finding

The screen, wireless and resolution settings you actually shoot with are not the ones the rating uses. Read every published runtime as the most you'll get.

Standby drain catches people too. Insta360's manual says a fully charged X5 holds its charge about 320 days powered off with Bluetooth off, and about 40 days with it on. Leave Bluetooth on in a drawer and the camera can be flat in six weeks.

Insta360 X5 Battery Life by Mode

The Insta360 X5 carries a 2400mAh battery, and its 208 minutes at 5.7K24 is the longest normal-speed video rating in the X-series on a standard battery. Insta360 spreads its X5 figures across three pages (checked Sep 30, 2026):

ModePublished RuntimeInsta360 Source
8K30, Standard BitrateAbout 93 minutesManual
8K30, bitrate not statedAbout 88 minutesSpec page
8K24, Endurance Mode115 minutesProduct page
6K24About 105 minutesSpec page
5.7K30About 135 minutesManual
5.7K24 (firmware v1.3.0 or later)About 208 minutesManual
5.7K24, Endurance Mode, 2800mAh Ultra BatteryAbout 235 minutesManual

The two 8K30 figures conflict. The manual labels its 93 minutes as Standard Bitrate, while the spec page gives 88 and names no bitrate. Insta360's High Bitrate cold-chamber test also lands on 88. We use the labeled 93-minute figure and name the bitrate.

The X6 moves the 8K picture. Insta360 rates its 2600mAh Xtreme Battery at about 140 minutes at 8K30 and claims a 51% runtime increase over the X5.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Battery Life

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 battery life comes down to one published number, the 180 minutes above, from an 1800mAh battery. The product page lists no 4K, 8K or cold-weather runtime for it.

The real offset to the shorter rating is charging speed. Insta360 says the Ace Pro 2 reaches 80% in 18 minutes on a 30W charger, so a lunch stop covers most of a battery.

The Action Camera With the Longest Battery Life

Picking the action camera with the longest battery life means comparing ratings that were never measured the same way. Every figure below comes from the brand's own spec or product page (checked September 30, 2026). All but MISSION 1 name a 25°C lab.

On the numbers as published, the DJI pair holds the highest 1080p24 rating at 240 minutes. GoPro's "up to 5 hours" for MISSION 1 is higher on paper, but it comes from a dedicated Endurance Mode at 1080p30. The ratings share no common test, so no camera here can claim the title outright.

One ranking article puts the GO Ultra at 40–45 minutes per charge. Insta360 publishes about 70, and we use that.

In a head-to-head of the Osmo Action 5 Pro and HERO13 Black, the gap between 240 minutes and roughly 150 is the single biggest practical difference.

DJI Osmo Action Battery Life

DJI Osmo Action battery life is the easiest rating to read, because DJI publishes the most about the cell. The Osmo Action 5 Pro and Osmo Action 6 share a 1950mAh, 7.5Wh, 3.87V battery with a charging range of 5°C to 40°C (41°F to 104°F). DJI does not publish a charging time for either.

DJI's Osmo Action Extreme Battery Plus fits the Action 6, Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 3, among others. For hours of recording from a fixed position, the Osmo Action 6 settings worth copying run the camera on external USB-C power with the battery out. The cell is the largest heat source in the body.

In the US, the Action 5 Pro was out of stock in every combo at DJI's US store (checked Sep 30, 2026). Action 6 stock shifts between DJI and US retailers.

GoPro Battery Life: HERO13 Black and MISSION 1

GoPro battery life figures for the HERO13 Black assume both screens are on with a 1-minute screensaver, plus HyperSmooth and wireless on.

How long does a GoPro battery last in a MISSION 1? It depends on the pack. The Enduro 2 carries the up-to-5-hour rating. The HERO13 Black's Enduro fits as a backup, but GoPro says it "won't provide the extended run-times and won't support fast charging." Enduro 2 is "backward compatible with select HERO Black models," and GoPro does not list which on that page.

Settings That Make an Insta360 Battery Last Longer

Resolution and frame rate move Insta360 battery life more than any other setting. The X5 drops from about 208 minutes at 5.7K24 to about 93 at 8K30. Match the resolution and frame rate settings per activity to the job, and save 8K for the shots that need it.

Smaller changes add up after that:

  • Endurance Mode, where the camera offers it
  • Standard Bitrate unless you plan heavy grading
  • The screen off, or a short screensaver
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off between transfers
  • PureVideo only when the light demands it, since it cuts the X6 from about 140 minutes to about 95 at 8K30

Timelapse sips power. Insta360 rates the X6 at about 360 minutes of 8K30 timelapse at a 2-second interval.

Lithium Batteries in Cold Weather: What Each Camera Publishes

Most lithium battery cold weather advice online is written for 12V RV and off-grid batteries. For a camera cell, the useful figures are the ones each camera maker publishes.

On paper, cold barely touches the X5 and X6. Their chamber figures show no drop between 0°C and -20°C. The older X4 does fall, from about 71 minutes at 0°C to about 65 at -20°C. Insta360 calls it laboratory data "for reference only," and does not say whether the battery started warm or had soaked at temperature first.

Why the Cold Cuts Runtime

A lithium-ion cell makes power by moving ions through a liquid electrolyte. Cold thickens that electrolyte and slows the reaction, so internal resistance rises. Under the load of 8K recording, the voltage sags below the point where the camera decides the battery is empty.

The camera then shuts down with charge still in the cell, and a battery that has sat in the wind reads lower than its real charge.

Keep Spares Warm and Charge Them Warm

Carry spares in an inside pocket against your body, and swap in a warm one as soon as the cold one starts to fade. Before you bring a frozen camera indoors, seal it in a zip bag. Condensation then forms on the outside of the bag, away from the lens and ports.

On the slopes, the published operating temperature is the first spec we check, and it leads the criteria behind the best action camera for skiing ranking.

◆ Warning

Don't charge a battery that's still cold. Charging a cold lithium-ion cell can plate lithium metal onto the anode, a capacity loss that warming the cell won't undo. I'd hold every camera to DJI's 5°C charging floor.

Charging and Carrying a Spare Action Camera Battery

A fast charger and a spare action camera battery close most runtime gaps. Charge times as each manufacturer publishes them (checked September 30, 2026):

CameraTo 80%To 100%Charger
Insta360 Ace Pro 218 minutes47 minutes30W PD3.0 PPS

GoPro MISSION 1About 27 minutesAbout 60 minutesPPS charger
GoPro HERO13 Blacknot publishednot publishednot published

Swipe for 1 more column →

The X5's product page says 80% in 20 minutes and its spec page says 36, because they assume different chargers. The fastest figures need a USB-C charger with PD3.0 PPS, and a plain 5V/3A brick doubles the X5's full-charge time.

On multi-day trips, a USB-C PD power bank refills batteries between shoots. Carry one spare and the 60-minute gap between the Ace Pro 2 and the DJI pair largely stops mattering. With the gap closed, image quality and low light decide the best action camera for hiking ranking again, and the Ace Pro 2's 18-minute fast charge is the better answer to running flat.

Under the FAA's lithium battery rules (page updated August 11, 2026), spare lithium-ion batteries go in carry-on baggage only, with the terminals protected from short circuit. Each is limited to 100Wh without airline approval, and DJI's 7.5Wh is well under that. Insta360 and GoPro publish no watt-hours on the pages we checked, so we don't convert their mAh figures. Confirm with your airline before you fly.

No spec sheet we checked gives a cycle-life rating, though Insta360's battery guidance puts lithium-ion cells at about 300–500 cycles. GoPro's own notes show first-party packs losing fast charging in the wrong camera, so a third-party battery is a bigger gamble on fit and firmware.

Frequently asked questions

How Long Does an Action Camera Battery Last?

An action camera battery lasts about 1.5 to 4 hours of continuous recording on most current models, by the manufacturers' own ratings. The long end comes from 1080p24 tests with the screen off. At 8K30, the Insta360 X5 and GoPro MISSION 1 are both rated near 90 minutes. Screen and Wi-Fi use push it lower.

How Cold Is Too Cold for a Lithium Battery?

For recording, a lithium battery is too cold below -20°C (-4°F), the bottom of the operating range most action camera makers publish. Charging needs more warmth. DJI sets a 5°C (41°F) charging minimum for its Osmo Action cameras, and Insta360 and GoPro publish none. Warm any battery before you plug it in.

What Happens If a Lithium Battery Freezes?

A lithium battery that freezes usually loses runtime while cold and recovers most of it once warm, but storing it below freezing can do lasting harm. SLAC research on lithium-ion batteries in extreme cold (2021) found below-freezing storage can crack cathode material, costing up to 5% more capacity after 100 charges than warmer storage.

Can I Store Lithium Batteries in a Cold Garage?

No, not in a garage that drops below freezing for long stretches. Lithium batteries pick up lasting damage in below-freezing storage, and a garage that swings between cold nights and warm days invites condensation. Insta360 advises storing batteries at around 50–60% charge somewhere cool and dry. An indoor closet does that better.

Can an Action Camera Record While Charging?

Yes, many action cameras can record while charging over USB-C, including the Insta360 X5 and GO Ultra. Insta360 warns that recording while charging makes the X5's temperature rise quickly and can trigger its overheating protection. It recommends a 5V/3A charger for charging while you record, so check your camera's manual first.

Buy for the Longest Day You Actually Shoot

Insta360 battery life is published in more modes and temperatures than any rival's here, though the cold-chamber figures cover only the X-series. Read the rating for the mode you actually shoot, and pack a warm spare for anything below freezing.

Runtime didn't decide the best action camera ranking either. The Ace Pro 2 took first place on a 180-minute rating, 60 minutes short of the fourth-placed Osmo Action 5 Pro.
