◆ Key takeaways
- A mouth mount gives the most natural surfing camera angle, but a full-size camera puts 146g–207g on your teeth.
- GoPro's Surfboard Camera Mounts ship with tethers and are "Not recommended for Softtops."
- A floating hand grip is the only one of the three mounts that films other surfers.
- No manufacturer publishes a buoyancy figure for its floating grip, so tether the camera and rinse it in fresh water after every session.
What a Camera for Surfing Needs Before You Mount It
A surfing camera has to clear four floors before any accessory matters. You need a bare depth rating, a mount interface your accessories fit, horizon leveling and a weight your mount can carry.
| Camera | Bare depth | Weight | Native mounting |
|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro | 20m | 146g | Not named in DJI's spec table |
| GoPro MISSION 1 | 20m | 207g | Mounting fingers, 1/4-20 thread, Magnetic Latch compatible |
| GoPro HERO13 Black | 10m (33ft) | 159g (ACA figure) | Built-in fingers, 1/4-20 thread, Magnetic Latch (sold separately) |
| Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | 12m | 184g | Magnetic mounting system |
| Insta360 GO Ultra | 10m camera; Action Pod IPX4 splashproof only | 52.9g camera, 108.5g Action Pod | Magnetic |

Sources: DJI, GoPro and Insta360 spec pages (checked Sep 30, 2026), except the HERO13 Black weight, which is ACA's figure because GoPro's spec tab could not be read.
The Ace Pro 2 is the only camera in ACA's best action camera for extreme sports picks rated below 20m bare. The Osmo Action 5 Pro vs HERO13 Black matchup puts DJI's camera at 20m bare against GoPro's 10m, and it found the Osmo Action 5 Pro out of stock in every combo at DJI's US store on September 28, 2026.
ACA's comparison also notes that all three major brands now use compatible mounting fingers and standard threads, so GoPro-pattern surf mounts work across brands. DJI and Insta360 cameras reach them through a quick-release or magnetic adapter.
Mouth Mount: The Surfer's-Eye View
A mouth mount points the camera wherever your head points, so the footage follows your eyes down the line. Your neck soaks up chop that a board mount records in full.
The costs are physical. You can't call out to anyone, a duck dive drags the camera through the water and a wipeout loads your teeth.
Setting Up an Action Camera Mouth Mount
Five steps get an action camera mouth mount ready before you paddle out:
- Attach the camera and hand-tighten the screw until it can't rotate.
- Set the tilt on the beach with your head in riding position.
- Add a floaty or a tether.
- Start recording before you walk in, because you can't reach the buttons with the mount in your mouth.
- Seat the mouthpiece evenly across your teeth and relax your jaw between waves.
The GoPro mouth mount is the Bite Mount, with a "food-grade silicone mouth piece" and an "adjustable set screw" to tilt the camera. GoPro sells the Floaty for it separately and does not publish the mount's weight or whether it floats on its own.
DJI's Osmo Action Bite Mount weighs 35g and fits the Osmo Action 5 Pro and earlier Osmo Action models directly. DJI's store showed it "Out of Stock" on September 30, 2026. Insta360 sells a POV Mouth Mount too, but its store page didn't load product details for us.
What the Bite Costs You
Your jaw carries the whole camera. Before you add the mount, that's 146g for the Osmo Action 5 Pro, 184g for the Ace Pro 2 and 207g for the MISSION 1.
At 52.9g for the camera alone, the Insta360 GO Ultra is the light option, and ACA's review puts its runtime without the Action Pod at 70 minutes. Its pod is rated IPX4 splashproof only, so it stays on the beach.
Teeth do not grow back. The American Dental Association's mouthguard guidance says "any athlete may experience a dental injury in non-contact activities too," and mouthguards exist to cushion a blow. A camera arm clenched between your teeth gives a wave something to lever against.
◆ Warning
Open your jaw the moment you fall. Tether the mount to your leash or wrist so you can let go, and skip the mouth mount in heavy shore break.
Surfboard Camera Mount: Deck, Nose and Tail
A surfboard camera mount gives you the one angle a mouth mount can't, which is you.
Where to Put It
On the nose facing back, the camera frames you from the feet up with the wave behind you. A tail mount facing forward records the wave ahead. Set a nose mount slightly off-center so it stays out of your chest line when you paddle.
Use the widest field of view and turn on horizon leveling. A board rolls far more than your head does.
Adhesive Prep and the Tether
GoPro, DJI and Insta360 publish no adhesive cure time on their board-mount product pages, so general adhesive practice applies. Strip every trace of wax, degrease the spot with isopropyl alcohol and apply the base at room temperature. Press it hard, then give it time to cure before the board gets wet.
Every action camera surfboard mount depends on that bond, and the tether is the backup when it fails. GoPro's Surfboard Camera Mounts include "2 Surfboard Mounts, 2 adhesive anchors and 2 camera tethers."
Insta360's Floating Surfboard Mount pairs a "3M adhesive base" with a "3M Dual Lock Reclosable Fastener," and Insta360 calls it "floatable and sink-proof" if the camera gets knocked off. DJI's Osmo Action Surfing Tether Kit, a 6g tether plus a flat 3M adhesive base, also showed "Out of Stock" on September 30, 2026.
Soft tops are the exception. GoPro lists its Surfboard Camera Mounts as "Not recommended for Softtops," so look for a strap- or leash-based mount on foam.
Floating Hand Grip: Shooting Other Surfers
Filming Surfing From the Water
Filming surfing from the water means swimming out to the shoulder of the wave and letting the surfer come to you. Hold the camera low. Half-submerge the lens for a split shot with the board above and the water below, and duck the camera under when a wave breaks on you.
Water droplets on the lens can spoil a well-framed clip. The old fix still works. Lick or spit on the lens so water sheets off the glass.
Know where the rip is before you swim out with a camera. NOAA's guidance on rip currents says they can move "at speeds of up to eight feet per second," and its advice if you're caught is to "swim parallel to the shore" and head back at an angle (page updated September 23, 2026).
Which Grip Fits Which Camera
GoPro's floating handle, The Handler, comes with a wrist strap and a bright orange cap. GoPro says it "keeps your GoPro afloat" but does not publish a buoyancy figure or a maximum camera weight. The MISSION 1 is the heaviest camera in the table above at 207g.
Insta360's Floating Hand Grip fits the X6, X5, Ace Pro 2 and GO Ultra, though without a dive case a GO 3S needs the Quick Release Mount and a GO Ultra needs a Magnetic Quick Release Mount. Insta360 publishes no buoyancy figure either.
DJI's Osmo Action Floating Handle page returned "Not available in your country/region" for us, so its US availability is unverified. DJI's surfing accessories page also lists an Osmo Action Floating Case with a wrist lanyard, and DJI says a camera in it "will float to the surface," with no stock status shown.
A 360 camera on a grip hides the grip in the stitch line and lets you pick the angle in editing. The Insta360 X6, the top pick among ACA's best 360 camera options, is rated to 20m bare.
Settings That Hold Up in Spray and Glare
Set the surfing camera to 4K120 so a bottom turn plays back at quarter speed on a 30fps timeline. The Osmo Action 5 Pro, Ace Pro 2, MISSION 1 and HERO13 Black all record 4K120, and the MISSION 1 PRO adds 4K240.
For horizon leveling, DJI offers HorizonSteady and HorizonBalancing. Insta360 pairs FlowState with Horizon Lock, and GoPro builds Horizon Lock into HyperSmooth on the MISSION 1.
Leave the shutter on auto and bright water gives you a fast shutter that freezes spray, which suits slow motion. Lock it at double the frame rate for natural motion blur and you'll need an ND filter.
Rinse, Dry and Check the Seals After Every Session
◆ Key finding
A depth rating is a factory measurement on a new camera, held still, in clean fresh water. A wave strike creates a pressure spike far above the static pressure at that depth, and no depth rating describes impact. A depth rating is not a dive plan either.
ACA's underwater guide calls for a housing in surf even when the bare rating covers the depth, and only some cameras can take one. The Ace Pro 2 has no published housed rating, while the X6 and GO Ultra reach 60m in their Insta360 dive cases.
Before you paddle out, close every door until it clicks and run a fingertip along each gasket. One grain of sand is a leak path.
After the session, give the surfing camera 30 seconds under a fresh tap, then dry it. Salt left to dry is the slow form of action camera salt water damage, with crystals conductive enough to bridge contacts and corrosive enough to eat board traces over the following weeks.
What Manufacturers Don't Publish
Surf accessories publish fewer numbers than the cameras they hold.

Frequently asked questions
What Is the Best Camera for Surfing?
The best camera for surfing is rated to at least 20m bare and light enough for your mount. Both the Osmo Action 5 Pro (146g) and MISSION 1 (207g) clear 20m, though DJI's US store had the Osmo out of stock on September 28, 2026. The 12m Ace Pro 2 still wins the GoPro vs DJI vs Insta360 comparison.
How Can I Film Myself Surfing?
To film yourself surfing, put an action camera on a mouth mount for POV or on a nose-mounted board mount for a third-person angle, then start recording before you paddle out. From the beach, a camera or phone on a tripod with a long telephoto lens works, and auto-tracking tripod systems exist for shooting solo.
What Is a Bite Mount?
A bite mount, also called a mouth mount, is a mouthpiece with a camera arm that you hold in your teeth, so the camera points wherever you look. GoPro's uses a food-grade silicone mouthpiece with an adjustable set screw for tilt, and DJI's weighs 35g. Tether it, because neither brand says its mount floats.
Can You Surf With an Action Camera?
Yes, you can surf with an action camera, as long as it's waterproof and tethered to you or your board. The cameras here carry bare ratings of 10–20m, but no depth rating covers a wave impact. Surfing with a GoPro works the same way. Rinse it in fresh water after every session.
How Do You Remove a Camera Mount From a Surfboard?
To remove a camera mount from a surfboard, warm the adhesive with a hair dryer, then saw under the base with fishing line or dental floss and peel it away slowly. Keep the dryer moving so the heat doesn't soften the glassing. Clean the leftover residue with isopropyl alcohol before you wax that spot again.
A Surfing Camera Is Only as Safe as Its Tether
Adhesive lets go and a jaw opens in a wipeout. A tether back to your leash or the board is the one part of a surfing camera setup that survives both, and a floating grip's wrist strap does the same job. The mouth still wants the lightest body, and the deck wants 20m bare.
Depth without a housing is only the fifth of six criteria in the best action camera ranking, which is how the 12m Ace Pro 2 sits first. Surfers should read that column before the order.
