The best camera for scuba diving in 2026 is the Insta360 X6. It is rated to 20 m with no housing and 60 m in the Invisible Dive Case Pro, and it is the only pick here that publishes both its dynamic range (14.5 stops) and its screen brightness (1200 nits). It is also the joint most expensive pick, at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026, no promotion).
If you came looking for a GoPro to dive with, the answer is not the HERO line. The GoPro HERO13 Black is rated to 10 m and the GoPro MAX2 to 5 m. The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO is rated to 20 m bare and 60 m housed — the X6's two figures exactly, at the same $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026) — and it ranks second on those numbers, not as a courtesy. The standard GoPro MISSION 1 is also 20 m bare, but GoPro publishes no housed rating for it.
Third is the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro: the same 20 m bare and 60 m cased as the two leaders, for $319.00 at B&H (checked 28 September 2026; out of stock at DJI's US store), and the lightest pick at 146 g. That 20 m bare puts it ahead of the Insta360 X5 ($549.99, checked 28 September 2026), which is rated to 15 m bare and ranks fourth, level with the other three at 60 m cased.
Every figure is the manufacturer's published specification unless marked otherwise; where nothing is published, the cell says not published. And a depth rating is a hardware specification, not a dive plan — how deep you dive is not a camera decision.
At a glance
Housed depth is the deciding column. The Osmo Action 6 row is unranked; the concession section explains why it is here.

The standard GoPro MISSION 1 ($599.99, checked 28 September 2026) is also rated to 20 m bare, but GoPro publishes no housed rating for it, so, like the Osmo Action 6, it cannot be scored on housed depth and is unranked.
Several columns are not the X6's to win: the MISSION 1 PRO ties it on both depths and beats it on sensor, the Osmo Action 5 Pro matches both its depth figures for $380.99 less, and both DJI cameras are lighter than the X6 — at 146 g the Osmo Action 5 Pro is the lightest camera in the table.
What actually matters for a diving camera
On a diving page the order of the criteria is the argument, so here are all six, in decision order, before the picks.
1. Depth rating without a housing. What the camera survives when the case is not on — left on the boat, forgotten, or leaking. It decides whether a mistake costs you the footage or the camera.
2. Depth rating housed — and whether the manufacturer publishes one at all. This eliminates two current 360 cameras outright: GoPro publishes no housed rating for the MAX2, and DJI publishes none for the Osmo 360. It also leaves the standard MISSION 1 unscored. All four picks publish 60 m.
3. Published dynamic range. A dive is a high-contrast scene — bright surface, dark water, a lit subject against blue — and dynamic range is the one image-quality figure any of these manufacturers publishes.
4. Sensor size. Water takes light away; a larger sensor gathers more of what is left.
5. Weight. On a tray, an arm or a mask mount, grams add up.
6. Price. The price charged on the check date, with any promotion labelled as one and its list price beside it.
The criteria are applied in that order, and the first one that separates two cameras decides between them. The X6, the MISSION 1 PRO and the Osmo Action 5 Pro tie on the first two, so published dynamic range decides: 14.5 stops for the X6, 14 for the MISSION 1 PRO, and none published for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. The X5 is fourth because its 15 m bare trails the other three's 20 m at criterion 1.
One rule makes that ranking auditable: a criterion with no published figure cannot be scored. That is why the MAX2, the Osmo 360 and the standard MISSION 1 cannot be ranked for housed depth, why the Osmo Action 5 Pro scores nothing on criterion 3, and why screen brightness is not a criterion — among the picks, only the X6 publishes a nits figure.
callout — not-published GoPro publishes no screen-brightness figure for any camera it sells, and no dynamic-range figure outside the MISSION 1 line. DJI publishes brightness for the Osmo Action 6 but keeps dynamic range out of its spec tables, and publishes neither figure for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Insta360 has gaps too: no brightness figure for the X5, and neither brightness nor dynamic range for the X4 Air.
And a rated depth is not a dive plan. It is what the manufacturer says the hardware survives. This page cites no training, certification or recreational depth limit: how deep you go is a decision about you, not the camera.
highlight If a manufacturer will not publish a housed depth, do not take the camera deeper than its bare rating.

Insta360 X6
- Depth, no housing
- 20 m
- Depth, housed
- 60 m, Invisible Dive Case Pro
- Dynamic range
- 14.5 stops, published
The verdict in one line: the deepest bare rating of any 360 camera on this page, and the only pick that publishes both a dynamic-range and a screen-brightness figure.
Among 360 cameras the X6 wins the first criterion outright: 20 m bare is four times the MAX2's 5 m and double the Osmo 360's 10 m. Its 14.5 stops is the highest published dynamic range here, and its 2.32-inch OLED is the only screen among the picks with a published brightness: 1200 nits, the figure that matters when framing in surface glare. Two 1/1.1" custom Sony square sensors at F2.0, 8K50, 120MP 360 stills, Replaceable Lenses 2.0, 196 g.
Three things to know. The 2600 mAh Xtreme battery gives 140 minutes at 8K30 but 79 at 8K50. The Insta360 App cannot export 8K on mobile — 8K and 11K need Insta360 Studio on a desktop, which means a laptop on a dive trip. And Insta360's own sources disagree on the IP rating: IP68 on the product page, IPX8 in the manual's spec table, 20 m in both. The manual also lists a 1300 mAh Lite battery the product page omits.
The con that decides against it for many divers: once cased, the Osmo Action 5 Pro reaches the identical 60 m for $380.99 less, and the X5 for $150 less.
Full detail, including the IP68 / IPX8 conflict, in our Insta360 X6 review. Which case fits which camera: our Insta360 dive cases guide.
+ Pros
- 20 m bare, four times the MAX2's 5 m
- 60 m in the Invisible Dive Case Pro
- 14.5 stops, the highest published here
- 1200-nit OLED, the only published brightness among the picks
− Cons
- $699.99, level with the MISSION 1 PRO as the priciest pick
- 79 minutes at 8K50
- No 8K export on mobile
- IP68 or IPX8, depending on which Insta360 source you read
02GoPro MISSION 1 PRO
GoPro MISSION 1 PRO
- Depth, no housing
- 20 m
- Depth, housed
- 60 m
- Sensor
- 1"-type, 50MP · 14 stops published
The verdict in one line: it ties the Insta360 X6 on both depth ratings at the same price, has the largest sensor on this page, and it is the real answer to "which GoPro for diving".
The MISSION 1 PRO is rated to 20 m bare and 60 m housed, the X6's two figures exactly. Its 1"-type 50MP sensor is the largest of any pick — physically larger than each of the X6's two 1/1.1" sensors — and its 14 published stops, with GP-Log2, are beaten only by the X6's 14.5. It shoots 8K60 and 4K240, runs 3 hours or more at 4K30, and publishes a −20 °C to 45 °C operating range. Then the rig: GoPro's accessory long tail is the largest of the three brands — trays, arms and light mounts nobody else matches.
The limits: 207 g, the heaviest pick; no published screen brightness, as for every camera GoPro sells; and it is not a 360 camera, so there is no reframing afterwards. Against the X6 it splits on criterion 3, 14 published stops against 14.5, and that half-stop is what separates first from second here. Against the Osmo Action 5 Pro the same criterion works for it: level on both depths, and 14 published stops against none.
Do not confuse it with the standard MISSION 1, which is also rated to 20 m bare but has no published housed rating.
Our GoPro MISSION 1 review covers the line and names where the PRO differs.
+ Pros
- 20 m bare and 60 m housed, identical to the X6
- 1"-type 50MP, the largest sensor here
- 14 stops published, with GP-Log2
- 8K60 and 4K240
- The largest accessory long tail of the three brands
− Cons
- 207 g, the heaviest pick
- No published screen brightness
- Not a 360 camera
- $699.99, level with the X6 as the priciest pick
- 14 stops against the X6's 14.5
03DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
- Depth, no housing
- 20 m
- Depth, housed
- 60 m, cased
- Weight
- 146 g
The verdict in one line: the two leaders' 20 m bare and 60 m cased for $380.99 less than either, at the lowest weight of any pick — it trails them only because DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure.
Three cameras on this page publish both 20 m bare and 60 m cased: the X6, the MISSION 1 PRO and the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Read strictly in this page's criteria order, that puts the DJI ahead of the X5: it beats it on bare depth, 20 m against 15 m, and ties it housed. It sits below the X6 and the MISSION 1 PRO only because DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure for it, so it cannot score on criterion 3. At 146 g it is the lightest pick, 50 g under the X6 and 61 g under the MISSION 1 PRO. A 1/1.3" sensor, 4K120, 240 minutes of rated runtime, and a published operating range of −20 °C to 45 °C (DJI, checked 28 September 2026).
The limits: it is not a 360 camera, so there is no reframing afterwards; it tops out at 4K120 where both leaders shoot 8K; its 1/1.3" sensor is the smallest among the picks; and DJI publishes neither its dynamic range nor its screen brightness. On price, $319.00 at B&H is $380.99 below the X6 and the MISSION 1 PRO and $230.99 below the X5. DJI's US store lists it at $319 but showed it out of stock in every combo on 28 September 2026, so B&H is where to buy it. If you do not need 360 capture, buy it instead of the X5.
+ Pros
- 20 m bare and 60 m cased, level with the X6 and MISSION 1 PRO
- 20 m bare against the X5's 15 m
- 146 g, the lightest pick
- $380.99 under the X6 and the MISSION 1 PRO
- −20 °C to 45 °C operating range published
− Cons
- Dynamic range and screen brightness not published
- 1/1.3" sensor, the smallest among the picks
- 4K120 ceiling, and not a 360 camera
- Out of stock at DJI's US store on 28 September 2026; in stock at B&H
04Insta360 X5
Insta360 X5
- Depth, no housing
- 15 m
- Depth, housed
- 60 m, Invisible Dive Case
- Runtime
- 208 min at 5.7K24, Endurance Mode
The verdict in one line: the same 60 m housed rating as the X6 and the MISSION 1 PRO for $150 less than either — for anyone who wants 360 and always dives with a case on, arguably the right pick.
Cased, the X5 is level with all three picks above it at 60 m; bare, it is rated to 15 m, three times the MAX2's 5 m but 5 m short of the other three picks, which is what puts it fourth. Insta360 publishes 13.5 stops for it. Two 1/1.28" sensors at F2.0, 8K30, 72MP 360 stills, replaceable lenses, 200 g. On a liveaboard the figure that matters more than resolution is 208 minutes at 5.7K24 in Endurance Mode, the longest in the X-series; at 8K30 it is 93 minutes against the X6's 140.
On price: its Labor Day promotion has ended, and at $549.99 (checked 28 September 2026) it is $150 under the X6 and the MISSION 1 PRO but $230.99 above the Osmo Action 5 Pro. What that money buys over the DJI is 360 capture and a published 13.5 stops.
+ Pros
- 60 m cased, level with the three picks above it
- 15 m bare, three times the MAX2
- 13.5 stops published
- 208 min in Endurance Mode, the longest in the X-series
− Cons
- 15 m bare, 5 m short of the three picks above it
- Peak brightness not published — the figure you want on a bright deck
- 8K30, not 8K50
- 93 min at 8K30, against the X6's 140
- 200 g, the heaviest Insta360 pick
Where the rivals win
Four concessions, each on a published figure. The X6 does not win every criterion here, and it does not come close.
GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ties the X6 on both depths, and beats it on sensor size
The MISSION 1 PRO is rated to 20 m bare and 60 m housed — exactly the X6's two figures, on the two criteria this page ranks first. On sensor size it beats the Insta360 X6 outright: a 1"-type 50MP sensor, physically larger than each of the X6's 1/1.1" pair. Its 14 published stops trail the X6's 14.5 by half a stop. It carries the same $699.99 price (checked 28 September 2026). On four of this page's six criteria — bare depth, housed depth, sensor size and price — it matches or beats the top pick.
DJI Osmo Action 6 ties the X6 at 20 m and is 47 g lighter
The Osmo Action 6 is rated to 20 m bare, level with the X6, and weighs 149 g against 196 g. It has a 1/1.1" square sensor, an f/2.0–f/4.0 variable aperture, a 2.5-inch rear screen at 1000 nits peak and 240 minutes of rated runtime.
Separately, as a fact about buying it rather than about the camera: DJI does not officially sell the Osmo Action 6 in the USA and publishes no USD price for it. B&H listed it at $436.00 on 28 September 2026, above DJI's 379 EUR non-US MSRP.
GoPro MISSION 1 PRO out-shoots the X6 on frame rate, and publishes a wider operating range
The MISSION 1 PRO shoots 8K60 and 4K240; the X6 tops out at 8K50, and at 4K120 in single-lens mode. That is a flat camera against a 360 one, but on the raw frame-rate figures the GoPro leads at both resolutions. It also publishes an operating range of −20 °C to 45 °C against the X6's −20 °C to 40 °C, 5 °C more at the warm end — and DJI publishes the same −20 °C to 45 °C for the Osmo Action 5 Pro (checked 28 September 2026). Neither figure is one of this page's six criteria, and on neither does the X6 lead.
GoPro's accessory long tail
It is the largest of the three brands. On a dive rig that means trays, arms and light mounts, and it is not a spec row, but it can decide the purchase on its own.
What the X6 leads on is published disclosure — the only pick with both a dynamic-range and a brightness figure — and 360 capture at the deepest bare 360 rating here. It does not lead on depth, sensor size, weight or price: the Osmo Action 5 Pro, ranked third, publishes the same two depth figures at 50 g lighter and $380.99 less.
What to skip, and other buying advice
The most useful thing this page can do is keep the wrong camera out of a dive bag.

Swipe for 1 more column →
Never take an Insta360 Luna Ultra into water. It has no waterproofing at all — not a shallow rating, none — and no dive case for it is on record. It is the most expensive Insta360 camera here and the one a diver must not buy.
The GoPro MAX2 is the wrong 360 camera for diving: 5 m bare, and no published housed rating. Its $299.99 is a promotion (list $499.99, checked 28 September 2026), not its price, and buying a 5 m camera for depth on a promotional figure is exactly the mistake this page exists to prevent.
The HERO line is not GoPro's dive answer. The HERO13 Black is rated to 10 m. For a GoPro that dives, buy the MISSION 1 PRO. The standard MISSION 1 ($599.99, checked 28 September 2026) is also 20 m bare but has no published housed rating, so, like the Osmo Action 6, it cannot be scored on housed depth.
The X4 and X3 stop at 50 m cased, not 60 m, and the X3 tops out at 5.7K30.
The Insta360 X4 Air is the lightest 360 route to 60 m, and it is not ranked here. It is rated to 15 m bare and 60 m cased at 165 g, the lightest in the X-series, for $399.99 (checked 28 September 2026; $399.00 at B&H). But the Osmo Action 5 Pro beats it bare, 20 m against 15 m, for $80.99 less; Insta360 publishes neither dynamic range nor brightness for it; and its 29MP 360 stills are about two-fifths of the X5's 72MP, which on a dive matters. Buy it only if you want 360 at the lowest weight.
The Ace Pro 2 is a snorkelling camera: 12 m bare, no published housed rating. Where 12 m is genuinely enough, it wins — see the best camera for snorkeling.
Two small bodies worth naming. The Insta360 GO Ultra (52.9 g) and Insta360 GO 3S (39.1 g) are both 10 m rated and 60 m cased — the four picks' housed ceiling from the smallest cameras here, which matters on a mask mount. The 10 m is the camera's alone: each GO's Action Pod, which carries the screen, is rated IPX4, splashproof only (checked 28 September 2026).
DJI's Osmo Pocket 3 is not water-rated at all, and the Osmo Nano is rated to 10 m but its Vision Dock is IPX4 only. The Nano is not officially sold in the USA.
Do not buy on a promotional price. The Labor Day promotions on the Insta360 X-series have ended: on 28 September 2026 the X5 was back at $549.99 and the X4 Air at $399.99, and the X6 carried no discount. Two prices on this page are still promotions — the MAX2's $299.99 (list $499.99) and the Osmo 360's $466.99 at B&H (list $549.99) — and both will end. Once you have chosen, our underwater shooting guide covers technique.

Which one to actually buy
Buy the Insta360 X6 at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026) for 360 footage from the deepest bare-rated 360 camera here: 20 m bare, 60 m cased, and the only pick publishing both 14.5 stops and a 1200-nit screen. Pack a laptop if you shoot 8K.
Buy the GoPro MISSION 1 PRO at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026) if you want a GoPro, or flat footage from the largest sensor here. It ties the X6 at 20 m bare and 60 m housed at the same price, with the biggest accessory ecosystem; the X6 keeps half a stop more published dynamic range and 360 capture. Not the standard MISSION 1, which has no published housed rating.
Buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026; out of stock at DJI's US store) if you do not need 360. It publishes the same 20 m bare and 60 m cased as the two above for $380.99 less, and at 146 g it is the lightest pick. DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure for it, which is the only reason it is third.
Buy the Insta360 X5 at $549.99 (checked 28 September 2026) if you want 360 for less than the X6 and your camera always goes in a case: the same 60 m for $150 less, and the longest runtime in the X-series.
Do not buy the Insta360 Luna Ultra for any water use, or the GoPro MAX2 for depth.
Ready to decide?
Insta360 and GoPro prices checked at their own US stores on 28 September 2026; neither the X6 nor the X5 carried a promotion. DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro checked at B&H on 28 September 2026, when it was out of stock at DJI's US store. All will move.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best camera for scuba diving?
The Insta360 X6 at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026): 20 m bare, 60 m in the Invisible Dive Case Pro, and 14.5 published stops. The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO matches both depths at the same price and is the better choice for flat footage; the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, ranked third, matches both for $319.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026).
Which GoPro is best for scuba diving?
The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO, not the HERO line: 20 m bare, 60 m housed and 14 published stops, at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026). The standard MISSION 1 is also 20 m bare but has no published housed rating. The HERO13 Black is rated to 10 m and the MAX2 to 5 m, with no published housed rating for either.
How deep can an underwater camera for scuba diving go?
Bare: 20 m for the X6, both MISSION 1 models and both DJI Osmo Action models; 15 m for the X5 and the unranked X4 Air. Housed: 60 m for all four picks and the X4 Air. Housed ratings for the standard MISSION 1, the MAX2 and the Osmo 360 are not published, so none of them can be ranked on it.
What is the best affordable underwater camera for scuba diving?
The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at $319.00 (B&H, checked 28 September 2026), 20 m bare and 60 m cased, ranked third here. The cheapest 360 route to 60 m is the Insta360 X4 Air at $399.99 (checked 28 September 2026) — but for diving photography, its 29MP stills trail the X5's 72MP.
What do you need for a GoPro scuba diving setup?
A GoPro with a published housed rating: that is the MISSION 1 PRO, rated to 60 m housed at $699.99 (checked 28 September 2026). After that, GoPro's accessory long tail, the largest of the three brands, supplies the trays, arms and light mounts.
